 Upcoming Spawns

** Please DO NOT  email me about when the spawns will be released for sale - individual fish will be put up at the stock up as soon as they become available. **

Page 1 / 2

Spawn #1/00

Daddy:"Fireworks"
cellmale2.jpg (49059 bytes)
Pretty good-looking specimen for a LFS betta! He is an opaque blue, and has streaks of red, and a lot of transparent areas in his caudal fin.
Mommy:
OPfemale1.jpg (27001 bytes)
A blue opaque DT female from Mr. Foo Hong Kong. HM geno. Original line from Siegbert Illig. This strain contains a slight red wash that disappears upon maturity. (Red-loss gene?)
This is actually an experimental cross. The father looks like he is a roundtail, hopefully the offspring will have a decent tail spread.  I'm aiming to produce some blue opaque - red-streaked coloured fish with this spawn, but there may be a few individuals with clean blue opaque colouration. The resulting spawn should resemble the father, with a larger dorsal fin due to the recessive dt gene. Crosses between the offspring of this spawn should produce 50% ST and 50% DT. Pictures of the young fish will be posted here as soon as they are ready for sale.

Availability : Small spawn, not for sale as yet

Spawn #2/00

Male :
hmgenobreed1.jpg (36308 bytes)
HM geno Royal Blue from Kris Joy. Originally from Peter Goettner's pure blue lines, this magnificent male has not a single spot of red. Very decent tail spread when he flares.
Female : "Angie"
hmgenofemalegd.jpg (38044 bytes)
Hm geno Turquoise female from Kris Joy. Originally from Peter Goettner's blue line. Has slight red wash in the anal fin, caudal fin rays have straight edges, and she boasts quaternary ray splitting.
Offspring should yield 50% Turquoise and 50% Royal Blue. Hopefully the red wash from "Angie" will not be passed down.

Update : Failed spawning on 24/1/2001. I think Angie's not ready yet, and the male beat her up. Will try again after Angie has healed her poor fins (yes, the guy's real rough!!) and is full of eggs again.

Spawn #1/01

Daddy:
DTMale.jpg (43398 bytes)
Superdelta Turquoise DTM.

Both lobes add up to more than 180º but he's a few degrees short overall when flaring due to overlapping of the lobes. Almost a full split down the middle with very full lobes - I simply can't ask for better! =)

Female:
CT female.jpg (33538 bytes)
DDR CT STF, grizzled blue and white. Nice big black eyes.

Not a good photo of her right after spawning! But Mr. DT on the left had been rather nice to her, haha.

Update 14/11/01: At 3.5 weeks old some of the babies are showing a blue coloration, and tail spread seems to be excellent. It's too early to tell though, as a few of them show an initial tail spread of 160-170º. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Update 15/11/01: Lost 5 fry last night due to drafts, and I just moved the tank to a warmer part of the house. Left with around 40 fry now. Probably too small a spawn to release, but as usual I will be giving out selected babies to the lucky few that have been promised them. =) Yes, FOC. OK, you know what to do, just be good friends with me, haha!
Update 24/11/01: Babies now 24 days old! Some are showing a nice turquoise iridescence on the anal fin, and a couple of them are large enough for me to see that the caudal spread is almost 160 degrees. I'm pleasantly surprised at the outcome of the caudal quality, since the female is but a CT anyway. Sadly a couple of the nicer ones are having some deformities, but hopefully they might grow out of it. I've just split the babies into 2 separate tanks so that they can have more space to grow out.

Spawn #2/01

Sire:
DTMale.jpg (43398 bytes)

Same as above, but his fins have now grown longer and fuller. Slightly torn during breeding with "Sapphire", as she's slightly larger than he is.

Madame: "Sapphire"
Deltafemale1.jpg (47096 bytes)
Disgusting photo! This just doesn't do her justice! OK, I see her coming over, flaring at me, LOL. Jokes aside, "Sapphire" is a Royal Blue STF, originally from Pacific Betta's stock.
Madame "Sapphire" one of the largest females I've ever seen in my life, so hopefully she'll be able to impart some of her size factor into the babies as well. Just wondering if the spawning will be successful, since this will be the first time I'm attempting to use a larger female.

Update 1/11/01:
The pair spawned, miraculously! Took a whole 4 days though, and poor "Sapphire" has been pretty badly beaten up. I reckon there are about 200 eggs in that nest now.
Update 3/11/01: Drats, more than 60% of the eggs are white and infertile. And Daddy isn't interested in eating non-viable eggs! Siphoned them out to another container and see if they hatch; very unlikely though.
Update 14/11/01: Babies now 2 weeks old and eating like pigs on wriggly microworms. Estimated around 50-75 fry in that tank, and tomorrow they will all be moved out of my air-conditioned room. I've learnt a lesson from Spawn #1/01 not to left cool drafts go near my tanks! Still a little too young for me to see the caudal spread quality, but I've got perfect confidence in this lovely pair.
Update 19/11/01: Babies 19 days old, and growing well! I've tried taking some pics of them, so here goes:
SPAWN2fry18.11.jpg (35474 bytes)2spawn2fry18.11.jpg (33996 bytes)
Not excellent pictures, but these are about the best I can get.
Update 24/11/01: I've just moved the tank out of my air-conditioned room, in the hope that I'll get a lower fry mortality rate from exposure to drafts.

Spawn #3/01

Daddy:
[NO PICTURE]
The poor guy died before I could take a picture of him - full story below.
He's a DR CT, multicolour (melano, cellophane and red). Nice delta tail.
Female:
CT female.jpg (33538 bytes)
DDR CT STF, grizzled blue and white. Nice big black eyes.

Not a good photo of her right after spawning!

Update 28/10/01: The spawning went VERY well - she's one of the most willing females I've ever had, and produced close to 300 eggs.
Update 29/10/01: Oh no! I've got a TSTL male!! He ate most of the eggs and started swimming around; I'm pretty sure he was smiling up at me just now. Removed him and artificially hatched the remaining eggs.
OK, now the story of how he died: I don't know what happened, but he was so round and full of eaten eggs. A few hours after taking him out he was gasping at the surface and eggs were strewn all over the place. A bad case of indigestion I suppose. OK, he kinda deserved it but still ... it's a life lost. =(
Update 30/10/01: Surprisingly more than 100 eggs still hatched.
Update 14/11/01: After two weeks there are still more babies than I can count! I bet it's still more than 100 fry in there. OK, so here's the deal. If they grow up nice and fine, I'll be letting them go en masse or in batches of 5 or 10 juveniles for a very small  token price (Hey, must at least let me have some $$ to buy more Quaker Oats to grow the microworms, right? They are eating microworms 3 times a day now). Students and reeeeaaallly nice people can have them for free. =)
