Spawn #4/01

Daddy: Purple Mustard Gas salamander
pMG_spawn2.jpg (36582 bytes)
Very nice male with beautiful purple sheen on the body. Should produce some good fry! Has some very nice purple colouration on the fins as well.
Mommy: Mustard Gas Salamander
pMGSalSTFbreed.jpg (33341 bytes)
Le Femme also has a purple sheen on the body, nice caudal spread. Fins look slightly orange when she's resting! Picture shows perfectly the barring that appears on females.
Hopefully this pair can get me some purple sheen on the babies as well, since both parents have it (you can see it clearly on the female). Probably throw a good percentage of true "Mustard Gas"-looking ones, and some multicoloured fish as well. Weather's perfect for spawning. =)

Update: 18/11/01: They finally spawned, but it's a really, really, really, really small spawn - one of the smallest I've ever had!! I would estimate 30-50 eggs only?!? But the female still looks like she can drop more, so hopefully tomorrow I can have some good news for you guys. The male's terribly beaten up! And so is the female, actually, haha. Tit-for-tat! I've got a matching female for the Purple MG guy, but she's a little small for breeding - albeit very eager to! Maybe the spawn will come at the end of the month. I want to work on the fin-ray extension of this line. Presently few show tertiary splits, most are secondary only. But outcrosses will tend to make the MG characteristics disappear, so .. headache!!! Come back for more updates, OK? Here's a pic of these 2 looking like a perfectly happy and compatible couple - just look at those stunning colours!
pMG_pair.jpg (43989 bytes)  Don't they just look absolutely gorgeous? hehe ... blowing my own trumpet about my fish, haha! But the contrast is pretty stunning, isn't it? OK, here you can have a good look of what Mommy Salamander looks like before she got beaten up.
pMGeggs.jpg (43332 bytes)
Managed to snap a shot of their eggs - it's a small spawn, isn't it? Well, I just removed the female.

Update 24/11/01: The fry hatched, but I counted only 20 fry! =( Pathetic. Will get Mr. Purple MG to spawn again early next month, this time with a sibling female.

This afternoon I used a plastic disposable pipette to siphon the fry out one by one into a smaller tank - they can't seem to find their food in such a large tank! Good news though - there are 51 fry!!

Spawn #5/01

Daddy: Salamander MG STM
[Picture Coming Soon]
Mommy: Salamander MG STF
[Picture Coming Soon]
23/11/01: Both parents show a nice purple sheen on their bodies, which I hope will be inherited by the babies. This spawn should throw approximately 50% reds and multicolours, and 50% yellow salamander MGs. Decently large spawn, about 100 eggs or so. Hopefully Daddy doesn't eat the eggs, I'll be removing the female tomorrow morning.
Update 24/11/01: Daddy fish is doing nicely with his job of looking after the babies. Wanted to take pictures of them today but decided otherwise - in their torn and tattered state, it would be so disgraceful for them to face the world! I'll wait till they've recovered somewhat before taking any pics.
