Bindrunes

Bindrunes consist of two or more runes superimposed on
each other and sharing a common stem. This fuses their
energies into a single shape, exhibiting a single runic
force and creating a powerful magical effect. Widely used
for talismans and charms, bindrunes are always joined to-
gether in some way, sometimes at the base of their stems,
forming a wheel, other times side-by-side or combined into
a single rune. Generally, the runes in bindrunes appear in
their upright shape.

Historically used as contractions in inscriptions, bindrunes either
save space or reduse the number of runes in the inscription to a more
magically auspicious total. Today bindrunes are employed in rune magic
to creat a magical symbol that encompasses more than one rune.

The most powerful bindrunes are made of three-rune combinations, and
are also key names in the Northern Tradition. Clearly demonstrating
the union between spirit and science, the number three is actually locked
into our very DNA. The genetic code that tells the cells in your body how
to arrange (or bind) amino acids to form protein chains is written in words
(codes) that are three letters (three bases) long. So it's no wonder the number
three frequently appears in all spiritual traditions. The "three" pattern, like
other numerical patterns, is inherent in our biochemistry.

In three-rune bindrunes, sometimes the name is thought to have more
significance than when the three runes are used in combination. Most
of the time, the runes and bindrune name they create are related in
a harmonious and powerful whole. You can use the following simple
bindrune formulas to access and amplify the universal runic energies:

Wunjo, Othala, Dagaz make WOD. This bindrune of divine
inspiration, spelling the name of Woden/Odin, invokes the
powers of the Norse god of wisdom and can be used to trans-
form a negative situation into a positive one.

Ingwaz, Naudhiz, and Gebo make ING. The name of the Earth
God of fertility and increase. This bindrune can be used as
a fertility talisman.

Sowilo, Othala, and Laguz make SOL. The name of the sun
goddess, who provides the strength and energy to deal with
change.

Ansuz, Sowilo, and Kenaz make ASC. The name of Yggdrasil.
This is a bindrune of pure power, survival, and longevity.

Ansuz, Laguz, and Uruz spell the word ALU. This symbolizes
the water of life, literally translated as "ale." This bindrune
signifies a change for the better, and can be used in magic for
protection and divine inspiration.

Othala, Naudhiz, and Dagaz make the bindrune OND. This is the
universal spirit of everything, which can help overcome problems.

Berkana, Ansuz, and Raidho make BAR. This means bear, conferring
the strength and power of the animal.

Uruz, Laguz, and Fehu make the bindrune ULF. This signifies
the wolf and all its cunning, stamina, and wisdom.

Wunjo, Lagaz, and Kenaz make the bindrune WLK. This is an
alternate, more ancient bindrune for wolf. It represents
Odin's companion wolves, Geri and Freki, and also the
tracking ability of the wolf.

Tiewaz, Othala, and Raidho make the bindrune TOR. This
signifies the Norse god of thunder, Thor, who can be
called upon for protection.

You can create your own bindrune by simply spelling
your name out in runes, and fashioning the staves to-
gether in a harmonious whole. Use your first, middle,
and last initials to do this, using the basic three-
rune bindrune formula. As you already know, the number
three is magical! Use this bindrune symbol to focus and
amplify your energetic field of intention. One way to do
this is to galdr your name while gazing at the bindrune.
Be creative. There isn't any right or wrong way to make a
bindrune, so just work the symbols in any way you want. The
only guideline is to keep the rune symbols upright as you
connect them. If you change their positions you alter their
meanings and energies.
