Urswick and Surrounding Area
The villages of Great and Little Urswick are two
of the many villages and hamlets of Low Furness. The other main villages
within the parish are Pennington, Stainton, Gleaston and Bardsea.
Great Urswick is an attractive village, with many properties overlooking
Urswick Tarn. The church here dates back to Norman times, there is a
shop/post office, two public houses "The Derby Arms" good ale and a
'crack' (slang for a good old gossip) and "The General Burgoyne" which
serves food, a restaurant "The Coot (on the Tarn)" where weddings and
receptions are often held.
Little Urswick, is smaller with it's own unique character, generally
quieter, ideal if you have had a hectic day and just want to unwind. In
spring the track alongside the camp site is filled with primroses,
daffodils and bluebells with their delicate scent more noticeable in the
late morning. Local honey can be obtained from Burnsmede Farm in the
centre of the village for those with a sweet tooth.
Stainton is a rather spread out village to the South and West of Little
Urswick. Here you will find "The Stagger Inn" inside there are many
interesting features and an interesting and varied menu.
Gleaston is another dormitory village, rather like Great Urswick, with
many attractive houses. However Gleaston has something none of the other
villages can boast and that is a castle! There is also a watermill under
restoration and on the same site a gift shop and Bistro selling meals
and snacks. The site also includes a small conference centre with
Broadband facilities.
Pennington to the North of Little Urswick and Bardsea to the East can
be considered dormitory villages, many people working in the larger
towns of Barrow-in Furness and Ulverston finding the travelling fairly
easy from these. Both have churches post Norman in style, with the spire
on Bardsea church being a landmark from the coast road (A5087) which
runs below the village.
