Ulverston
Ulverston, a busy market town in the southwest corner of Cumbria, is
famous for being the birthplace of Stan Laurel of Laurel & Hardy fame.
Another notable and perhaps more important person born in the town was
Sir John Barrow, whose birth place can be seen at the bottom of Rake
Lane. Whilst the town is overlooked by his monument, resembling a
lighthouse on top of Hoad hill, from which spectacular views can be
obtained.
The towns history is steeped in agriculture with a once weekly cattle
market still being held. Boat building, based on the canal basin, and
steel making also provided occupation for local people but these
industries ceased many years ago. The old iron works site is now
occupied by Glaxo Smith Kline, whilst other smaller industries can be
found in this area of the town.
Ulverston is an interesting place to visit with its cobbled streets and
variety of small retailers, farmers markets and various festivals are
held throughout the year (see local tourist info). George Fox began his
Quaker movement here living at Swarthmoor Hall whilst Stan Laurel was
born in Argyle Street in the town (a museum dedicated to Laurel and
Hardy is based in the town adjacent to the Roxy cinema and situated behind the Coroantion Hall) There is now a bronze statue of Laurel along with Hardy (with friend) outside the Coronation hall. Work on the site was completed on time and the statue unveiled by Ken Dodd complete with tickling stick! Look for the names of Stan and Ollies films just outside the Coro. To the South of the town along the coast
road (A5087) is Conishead Priory, now home to the Buddhist Manjushri
centre where various events are held for those wishing spiritual
healing. Follow the link tourist information or visit the Coronation
Hall for local events.
Ulverston and the Furness Peninsula are not as well known as those towns
and villages of the Lake District, but the area has attractive scenery
and numerous attractions and events throughout the year.
