Information, Information,Information!
For those who don't just want a restful break here are a few ideas;
Fishing, is widely available in the area with this ranging from coarse
fishing on the many ponds and tarns around the area, sea angling along
the coast or fly fishing on the many rivers and waters in the area. For
fishing on Urswick Tarn permits are available from the village shop in
Great Urswick.
For the more energetic there are swimming pools in Barrow, Dalton and
Ulverston and tennis at the Ulverston sports
centre (covered and outdoor courts). Golf is also available with a
number of courses (including links) and driving ranges to hone your
skills.
Then of course, for those who prefer, the area is well equipped for
ramblers, cyclists and those who just love nature. Horse riding, pony
treking and a variety of water sports (but not water skiing) are also
available, contact the local tourist information centres for more
information.
After an active day you may want to just unwind in one of the various
pubs and eateries in the area, The Stagger
Inn at Stainton, The General Burgoyne and The Coot on the Tarn (restaraunt)
at Great Urswick are all only a short drive away with The Copper Dog at Leece being just a bit further. Tea rooms recommended in The Times recently are 'The Bosuns Locker' on Roa Island and 'Gillams Tea Room' in Ulverston which uses organically produced local produce and serves vegetarian lunches.
These are
just a few of the many places in the area, your recommendations are
welcome.

The view below is of Piel Island
taken from the Lifeboat Station at Rampside. There is a Castle
and a Pub, the landlord of which can use the title of King of
Piel!! There are also several cottages on Piel which is only
accessible by boat. |
 |
Below is a guided cross bay
walk, do not attempt to cross the bay on your own the bay is
dangerous with quick sands and deep gullies. It is also the
fastest filling estuary in the country especially when there are
strong winds. |
 |
Above is peaceful
Chapel Island which lies between the Furness and Cartmel
peninsulas. Distances are deceptive and there are quick
sands in the estuary so don't be tempted to walk to the island. |
