Barrow in Furness
Barrow-in-Furness is second in size in Cumbria to Carlisle and of
great importance not only to the people of the Furness Peninsular but to
the economy of the county as a whole.
This is a young town, developed in 1839 as a port to export ore mined in
the area. Later it even had a brief spell in the aircraft industry -
building airships on Walney Island where there is a small Airport.
Shipbuilding of one sort or another has been a major industry in the
town from its beginnings, and the BAE Systems yard builds nuclear
submarines for the Royal Navy.
Barrow-in-Furness is a town looking to the future and has plans to
develop the docks for leisure, residential and commerce.
Recent developments in the town include the shopping centre 'Portland
Walk' which should prove an attraction for visitors and locals alike
with Debenhams, Top Shop, Goldsmiths(Jewellers), Jessops, Thorntons chocolate (stop here for coffee or hot chocolate) and others occupying stores on the
site. Hollywood park is a newer site boasting a multiplex cinema
(5 screens), 10 pin bowling alley, fitness club and retail stores. These
are just a few of the attractions for both visitors
and locals alike.
Barrow is surrounded by charming villages and places of interest: The
Dock Museum, Furness Abbey, Piel and Dalton Castles and other castles
and forts, nature reserves, stone circles, an ancient burial chamber and
a working watermill plus lots more for you to discover in the area.
Walney Island to the West of Barrow has pleasant, safe beaches, a bird
sanctuary (to the South of the island) and a links golf course.

The monks of this Cistercian Abbey
thought they had escaped Henry VIII's wrath, they rang their
bells in joy, but too soon! |
 |
Walney has safe, sandy beaches with
shingle break waters. On a lovely sunny day why not take a trip
over there. At the end of the Jubilee bridge you can go in any
of three directions to reach the Beach. |
