Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. (Frederick Douglass, 1857)

There is no consensus in how far the protesters want to take the demonstrations. Some students obviously want peaceful demonstrations while others are willing to fight. Which mode do you think is better?

Students and teachers marched towards the Secretariat today at 11 AM but were blocked at the Curzon Hall - High Court area. The students were trapped as police blocked them off from two ends of the road. The Curzon Hall gates were also locked to restrict the students. These obstacles were overcome by students as they scattered and  gathered again as police charged them with sticks. Then the police fired teargas. The students immediately lit fires to reduce the effects of the teargas and pelted bricks at the heavily armed and armoured police. In the confrontation several students and police were injured.

Later they marched to the Vice Chancelor's office since he gave the orders to lock the gates and since his permission was required by the police to block the procession. At the Vice Chancellor's office the students were attacked by JCD men, student wing of ruling BNP. The BNP students also vandalized the Institute of Fine Arts and burned the mock coffins that were used for protest.

The police had been making small charges and fired teargas. Then they made a bigger charge and fired more teargas shells forcing the students to flee into the Curzon Hall. That is when the students threw bricks to prevent the police from intensifying their attack.

The general students have called another strike tomorrow in all the educational institutions but exempted the S.S.C. examinations.

Here are a few pictures.
