I've always had a love of both history and literature so I suppose it's not surprising that once my little kits had all started school I began to yearn for new discoveries. Thus I entered Teesside University, gaining a BA(Hons.) in English and History.
I won't pretend it's easy being a full time mature student as well as holding down a marriage, a home, and a family. But it was an enriching experience, in both the academic and social aspects, and well worth the effort. |

Of all the literature I studied, two particular pieces stand out. The first was when we read Jane Eyre, and then followed it up by considering the text Wide Sargosso Sea by Jean Rhys. Rhys's novel re-tells the story of Jane Eyre but from the point of view of the first Mrs Rochester - the mad woman in the attic! In my opinion this is a marvellous work by Rhys. If you ever get the chance to read both novels - do so - but to gain the most benefit make sure you read Jane Eyre first! |

My favourite genre of poetry has to be that of the Great War, particularly that by Wilfred Owen and Siegfrid Sassoon. I'm also pretty partial to Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, a wonderful poem in which I find something new everytime. |

|
|
But I think my all time favourite poem is by Ben Jonson (1573-1637). It's always guaranteed to bring a lump to my throat and I've included it here. |
