Boa Kwan

Name:  Boa Kwan

Born:  11-05-1986

Lil' Bio:

Boa (or BoA* as it says on her CDs) is the international singing sensation of SMtown (a Korean record label).  This girl can sing really really well.  Unlike some other K-pop stars, when she actually sings in her performances, she sound pretty darn good.  And to top that off, she dances really really well.  I guess her choreographers take cues from American pop dancers and try to incorporate that style into her moves.  I dunno... but whatever they do, it turns out really well.  Boa not only sings in Korea, but also in Japan!  Wow!  She's fluent in Japanese, which is quite impressive.  She recently took the #1 spot in a Japanese music chart (forgot which one).  Quite an achievement considering she's not even Japanese.  But just take one listen to her songs and you'll know why.  They are absolutely amazing!  She always seems to be busy doing something, which is a good thing since that means fans get to see/hear more of her, but I imagine it's also quite tiring for her as well.  I heard (though I'm not sure if it's true) that she was once hospitalized for exhaustion.  Scary.  I think she needs to rest a bit more.  Oh yea, did I mention she's really pretty too?  Such a talented young lady...and she's only 15!  Wow!  The pic above is taken from the SMtown website.  I hope it's okay.  It's my fave pic of her, so I couldn't resist.  The other pics below are scans I made myself and pics that came with her CD, so I guess it's okay that I use them.

- BoA News -

01/10/2002 - Jewel Song Review - Well, I got the single, and it's just like I thought it was in the pre-review.  The packaging is nothing special.  The picture is alright too, but nothing special, so I'm going to stick with my pre-review and give it an 8.5/10 still.  Not bad, not bad.

Overall rating:  8.5/10

12/18/2002 - New Japanese Single - Here she comes again!  This girl just never takes a break.  Just a short three months after her latest Korean album, BoA comes out with a new Japanese single.  This one, titled Jewel Song, is a nice, soft ballad.  It comes coupled with another new song, BESIDE YOU, which is a more upbeat type song - the kind of song that we used to be accustomed to from her.  I haven't gotten my copy of the single yet, but I've heard both songs, so here are my impressions on both.

First up is Jewel Song.  This is the title track of the album, and feels a bit like Every Heart, which a good thing since that's my favorite of her Japanese songs.  Funny how she's been singing pop-ish songs for so long, but once she switches to ballads, she just as good, if not better.  Personally, I like her slow songs more.  My favorite songs by her are Waiting... from her second Korean album, and Every Heart from her Japanese album/single.  It starts out pretty soft and slow, then progresses into that kind of song that makes you feel like standing up and taking on the world.  You know what I'm talking about, right?  That 'My life is so great!' feeling.  Sounds like something that would play at the end of a romance movie when the lovers are finally reunited again.  It really is a great song.  The music video is quite nice as well.  It shows her singing, then viewing a video of her in some forest or something.  Good stuff.  Also note that the song is quite long... about five minutes (at least the music video is).

The coupled song this time is BESIDE YOU.  It's a brand new song - yay!  This song is kind of a mix between NO.1, Kiseki, and Snow White.  It starts of sounding like Kiseki, then switches to NO.1, then Snow White.  Kind of a strange mix, but it works out.  It's nothing really new for her.  The upbeat pop beats are familiar territory for those of us who have listened to BoA from the beginning.  Also note that this song is extremely short.  Just a little over two minutes.  That has to be a record for shortest song.

Overall, a good single.  Both songs are good BoA stuff.  I'd rate it pretty high, but the only thing that drags it down a bit is that it seems I've heard these songs before.  While reusing styles that work isn't bad, it could be time to move onto some new ones.  But hey, she IS busting out singles and albums left and right, so who and I to complain?

Overall pre-rating: 8.5/10 - I'll have the final rating up as soon as I get the album.  In the meantime, here's a track list:

1.  Jewel Song

2.  BESIDE YOU

3.  Jewel Song (Instrumental)

4.  BESIDE YOU (Instrumental)

Also, I'll try to get some music video captures up by tomorrow.

9/29/2002 - New Korean Album - Gee, she never stops, does she?!  Haha.  Well, this time it's Korean stuff.  She has a new album out.  It probably counts as her 2.5 because it's mostly her Japanese album in Korean.    A couple new songs though.  Plus a new song written by her!  She's so talented!  I believe it's already out.  You can head over to www.yesasia.com and order a copy like will within the next week.  It's called Miracle.  Expect a review within 2 or 3 weeks.  Here's a track list:

1.  Destiny

2.  Every Heart

3.  Valenti

4.  Deep Feelings Down Inside

5.  Share Your Heart (with me)

6.  Happiness

7.  Snow White

8.  Nobody But You

9.  Next Step

10.Nothing's Gonna Change

11.Listen to My Heart

9/27/2002 - Kiseki Review - I just got my copy of BoA's newest single, Kiseki!  Yay!  The single is actually quite good.  A bit better than I remember it from when I first heard it from the music video.  Good stuff.  I'll even say it's better than Listen to my Heart.  This time, the single is put together with a Japanese version of her Korean song, NO. 1 and a new song called Flower.  NO. 1 is set to the remixed version of the song that she performs.  It's more upbeat and I actually like it more than the version on her Korean CD.  The Japanese still sounds strange since I'm accustomed to the Korean version, but I'm sure it'll start sounding more familiar as I listen to it more.  Flower is an all new song, and I was looking forward to it.  It's okay in it's own right, but nowhere as good as her other coupled songs on previous singles.  Snow White is probably my favorite coupled song out of all her singles.  One really good thing about this single is the cover.  Sorry, I still don't have a scanner, so I can't show you, but the picture on it is really really nice.  Look it up at www.yesasia.com to see it.  It's REALLY nice.  And it's printed on good paper too.  The thick, construction paper-ish kind.  And on the reverse side, it has another cute pic of BoA.  I like em both a lot.  No English versions this time around which is probably a good thing since lately, her English translations have made absolutely no grammatical sense at all.  One more thing to note, this CD is rip-proof.  I know it says that on a lot of her singles, and they were'nt, but this one IS.  Well, nothing is totally rip proof, but when I popped this one into my computer and tried to rip it, it didn't work!  Though it sucks cuz now I can't have it on my playlist, that means you guys have to buy it now!  Which is good.  Support BoA!

Overall rating:  8.5/10 - Kiseki is a really good song, NO. 1 is nice too.  Flower is okay, but not great.  The packaging is the best out of all her singles so far.  Track list:

1.  Kiseki

2.  NO. 1 (Japanese version)

3.  flower

4.  Kiseki (Instrumental)

4.  NO. 1 (Instrumental)

5.  flower (Instrumental)

9/19/2002 - Kiseki Release - Just in case you forgot, BoA's new single, Kiseki, is released today.  I've already preordered mine at Yesasia.  Have you?  No?  Well hurry up and go!

9/09/2002 - ANOTHER New Japanese Single - Yes... you heard me right.  ANOTHER new Japanese single.  And she just only released Valenti too!  Mind boggling, I know.  This time it's called Kiseki.  I guess it'll be released on 9/19 cuz that's what it says on the music video, which I have recently aquired.  I'd make it available for you guys to download, but I only have 3 mb left to upload to this site, and it's a pretty big file.  So phooey.  You could always go on mirc and download it like I do.  This time it's gonna be coupled with a new song!  Woohoo!  The coupled song is called Flower, so we'll see how that sounds when it comes out on 9/19.  You can bet I'll preorder it when it become available to preorder on Yesasia!  It also comes with a Japanese version of NO.1 (her title track for her 2nd Korean Album).  I love that song, so I hope it sounds just as good in Japanese.  I didn't like the Japanese rendidtion of Don't Start Now that much, so let's hope this one is better!  For now, Kiseki sounds pretty good.  Probably as good as Listen to my Heart.  But I'll withhold judgment until I get the single and listen to it clearly and stuff.  Yup!

9/09/2002 - New Japanese Single -She recently released her new Japanese single called 'Valenti'.  It's coupled with 'Realize', which was already a track on her Japanese album.  Valenti is an upbeat song with a sort of Latin beat to it.  Strange to hear at first (Japanese lyrics with latin beat), but it's kinda catchy.  I rate it along with ID Peace B, which means it's still good, but not her best.  That honor belongs to the greatness of Every Heart.  Here's the track list of this single:

01.  VALENTI

02.  Realize (stay with me)

03.  VALENTI (English Version)

04.  VALENTI (Instrumental)

It also comes with a little playlist thing so if you pop it in your computer, it opens up the playlist.  Like the one on her Every Heart single.  Another thing to take note is that the English version of VALENTI once again makes no sense gramatically.  Not quite as bad as Every Heart's english version, but what happened to ID Peace B, and Amazing Kiss?  Those versions made perfect sense.  As did her Don't Start Now english one.  They must have changed the translator or something.  But I must say... change him back!  Overall rating for this single:  7/10 - Good single, but English version sucks, and the coupling song isn't new either.  Of course I she's known to overwork and stuff, so I don't want her to get hospitalized for exhaustion just to sing a new song to couple with her single!
