Chaostik Comics!

Welcome to the comic section of the site.  Here you will find links to the comics that I am involved in.  Right now that's only one, but maybe it'll increase sometime, huh?  On the main comic page (this page) you will also find reviews of comics from time to time.  But don't expect a review on like every comic every week, okay?  That's just way too much!  So anyway, enjoy!

Origin Part VI:  Dust to Dust

05/24/2002

origin6.jpg (24115 bytes)Writer:  Paul Jenkins

Penciler:  Andy Kubert

*Warning:  I reveal a major spoiler here, so don't read if you don't wanna know*

The Origin series finally comes to an end.  After so many delays book #6 is finally out and I am...quite disappointed.  I thought they were gonna pack a good double sized issue because at the end of book #5, they left a huge gaping hole in the plot.  They do their best to fill in the gaps in this issue, but it cuts off way to short.  I thought they were gonna stop when Wolvie gets captured by Weapon X, but alas!  They cut off WAY before that.  I don't really think it would have even taken up too much more space if they did.  They could pull a: 'X years later' and show what Wolvie's been up to for the past X years and then show how he got caught and the rest is history.  But anyway, for the part they did show, it was great.  Seems like Rose and Smitty are off to get married.  'Dog' comes back and finds Logan and the two have a good fight.  At the end, Logan wins and is about it make a Filet-o-Dog. when he accidentally <BIG HUGE SPOILER AHEAD!!!>kills Rose. <SPOILER OVER!> *shock!*

Actually, I saw that one coming, but whatever.  The writing is once again really great like it was in the other Origin books.  One thing I didn't get was why did Dog (who I think is Sabretooth, but it's not confirmed) suddenly comes and beats on Logan.  His dad asked him to bring him home, not kick is arse.  Weird.  And the ending was just plain weird.  Why was Smitty running after him?  And what was he saying about him needing Logan?  What can't he do on his own?  I don't get it.  Blargh.  Oh well.  Besides the cut off ending, the rest was great.

Peter Parker:  Spider-man #44

05/24/2002

ppsm44.jpg (27476 bytes)Writer:  Paul Jenkins

Penciler:  Humerto Ramos

Inker:  Wayne Faucher

Colors:  Studio F

I don't usually collect Peter Parker: Spider-man, but I made an exception this time because on of my fave artists, Humberto Ramos is drawing a four part miniseries.  Anyway, I apparently have been out of touch with the Spidey universe for quite a while because I didn't know that Harry Osborn died of a drug overdose and MJ left Peter.  Weird.  Anyway, this issue is pretty well written.  It's got that emotional punch to it with Peter talking things out with Aunt May (who I thought died?!) and then thinking things out on his own while web slinging through the city.  I like the part when he calls up MJ, but doesn't say anything.  Subtle, yet emotional.  Then Green Goblin comes up to start trouble, but interestingly doesn't do much to Spidey besides stabbing him in the arm with some spike.  The whole scene is nicely drawn.  Even with rain in the whole scene, everything is pretty clear.  I kinda wish there was a bit more color to it, but I got the idea this is supposed to be a depressing issue, so the dark blue atmosphere was actually quite fitting.  All in all, a good story, good writing and fantastic art.  Thumbs up.

Out There #10

Out There #10Writer:  Brian Augustyn

Penciler:  Humberto Ramos

Inker:  Sandra Hope

Colors:  Studio F

Man, in my opinion, Out There is one of the best comics out there.  The great combo of Ramos's art and Augustyn's writing is unbeatable.  The other comic these two teamed up to do was Crimson, which was fantastic.  Anyway, on to the issue.  In #9, Mark got nabbed by some crazy guy who had lost his wife and child in a car crash that he blames himself for.  Mark looks like his son, so he kidnaps him and drive away.  In this issue, Mark manages to persuade the guy to stop acting like a nut, but the ghost of his wife comes and tells him that the only way to redeem himself is to commit suicide.  But all works out well, when the ghost of his son come and tells him that he doesn't need to do it.  It's a little loose ended because I'm not exactly sure where the son's ghost came from.  The mean old wife ghost just suddenly turned into the son for no reason.  What the...  but that's okay since the rest of the issue was great.  It cool cuz you got to see a new way of using Cassie's powers.  Last time she used them to heal Mark from a gunshot wound and this time, she used them to calm a gangster down.  What exactly her powers are, I dunno, but they're pretty neat anyway.  You also get to see Zach's new power.  Last time he just blew up a bunch of crazy demons, but this time you see he's kind of like Spider-man!  He's got super strength and agility.  They still don't know how to use them, though.  They just kick in when there's danger.  All in all, this issue was awesome and would have gotten a 10 if that whole thing with the son's ghost was cleared up.

'Bruce Wayne:  Fugitive Part 7'

(aka Gotham Knights #28)

Gotham Knights #28Writer:  Devin Grayson

Penciler:  Roger Robinson

Inker:  John Flyd

Color:  Gloria Vasquez

This is part 7 of the Bruce Wayne: Fugitive cross-over event.  If case you're not up to date, Bruce Wayne has been accused of murdering Vesper Fairchild.  He was arrested and that was the Bruce Wayne:  Murderer? cross-over.  That ended and Fugitive began when Wayne decided to break out of jail and become Batman 24/7.  All in all, the Murderer books were really good and well written and the Fugitive ones started out okay, but are starting to get a little weak.  Some barely even mention the murder case with Wayne, so why even bother putting it in the cross-over?  Anyway, this book is part one of a two part series called 'Anti-Hero.'  It's got some Chinese gangs trying to kill each other because one supposedly offed another gang's homie.  Anyway, somehow, all this mixes up with some freaky coroner guy who seems to be able to bring back dead dudes.  Oh yea, the little two page part with Robin investigating the security tapes of Wayne Manor is in here too.  He finds out that someone tampered with one of the cameras and froze it.  Wala!  Some new evidence to go on.  But overall, this story was kind of weak, as Batman doesn't really do much except bust a few heads and stuff like that.  I'm not even sure why the Chinese gangs were in this issue cuz it seems like the coroner guy is the main villain dude.  Oh well, hopefully more will be cleared up later.  And why does the B-man even want to find this fugitive gangster?  Bats should have just kicked everyone's butt and arrested them.  But instead he goes looking for this gangster who supposedly killed another triad member.  Well, all in all, this one is okay.  The art is pretty dope sauce, as usual for the GK books, but I wish they'd do more with the crossover event like they did with Murderer.  The last Batgirl book was an example of a pretty neat tie-in.

'A World Without Young Justice - Part 1 - Strange Origins'

(aka Young Justice #44)

Young Justice Issue 44 CoverWriter:  Peter David

Art:  Todd Nauk, Lary Stucker

This is a kind of spin of the 'World Without Grown-Ups' thing that DC did a while back (which is where Young Justice came from).  It's not too clear in this issue, but for some reason or another, YJ has disappeared and now we are finding out what would have happened if YJ was never there.  Actually, there IS a YJ present in this issue, but not the same as we know.  Also present is Jason Todd, which is weird since he supposedly died like 8 years ago or something... anyway, I won't say anymore or I'll spoil it, plus I didn't really know what was going on in this ish anyway.  But I still thought it was a pretty well written issue.  One of the main reasons I like YJ so much is that it takes the super heroing thing and adds a turns it on it's head.  The same thing is present here.  It's not an entire laugh-fest either.  It's this well balanced formula of comedy and plot that makes me love YJ so much.  Of course, the plot in the ish was pretty confusing, but I'm going to guess that that's the way it was supposed to be since this is only part 1 of 5.  Pick it up only if a) you're already a collector of YJ or b) you're going to collect the entire World Without Young Justice event.  Oh yea, the entire World Without Young Justice event has covers drawn by one of my fave artists:  Humberto Ramos!  Awesome, no?  So if you're a fan of his and want to see him draw some DC characters, pick these up!
