SEPTEMBER Iowa Short Fiction Contest The Iowa Short Fiction and the John Simmons Short Fiction Awards are open to any writer who has not previously published a volume of prose fiction. Winning manuscripts will be published by the University of Iowa Press under the Press's standard contract. Must be a collection of short stories (novels not considered) of at least 150 word-processed, double space pages. No application form or submission fee required. Deadline is Sept. 30. The prize seeks to support a literature of social responsibility. Founded and fully funded by writer Barbara Kingsolver, the award advocates serious literary fiction that addresses issues of social justice and the impact of culture and politics on human relationships. This year's judges are Ruth Ozeki, Grace Paley and Terry Karten. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who have not published a book of more than 10,000 copies. Submissions must be original, at least 80,000 words and accompanied by a $25 reading fee. Entries accepted only in September. Short fiction and novels. Novel length is open and winning manuscript will be considered for publication. $5,000 prize and $25 entry fee. Postmark deadline for novels is Sept. 29. Short stories should not exceed 5,000 words and should be accompanied by a $10 entry fee. Postmark deadline for short fiction is Dec. 31. Entries judged as either state and national entries. LeGuin Prize for Imaginative Fiction Fantasy, horror and science fiction submissions welcome. Contest also open to stories that are good reads and reach beyond the boundaries of those genres. First prize $1,000 and publication in Rosebud. Submissions should be up to 3,000 words. Ursula K. Open to writers who have not previously published a children's book and are U.S. citizens. Manuscripts should be no more than 1,500 words, realistic fiction or nonfiction for children ages 2 to 10 (folklore and animal stories not considered), and address the needs of children of color by providing stories they can identify with. No entry fee. Include a cover letter with the author's name, address, phone number, brief biographical note, relevant cultural or ethnic information, how the author heard about the award and publication history, if any. Up to two submissions (entered separately) by each entrant. No simultaneous submissions.
