| In the beginning, there were just words between writer friends. One or more of us was moving away from all of us, and I had promised we'd stay in touch. I thought a listserv would be the best way to keep the words between us flowing. So, on May 19, 2000, I created MonkeyBREAD at what was then eGroups. The meaning of the name itself was a combination of things that just felt right ... Writing, the process that binds us, is our bread; it feeds both the writer and the reader; and if we are to sustain it, we are required to hone it with every letter or keystroke. As our family of writers grew - though by design, not too large - we became a community of voices that seasoned one another, grooming one another for the reading world at large, easing in and out of one another's writing minds the way Thelonius Monk infiltrated consciousness with rhythm. Over our existence, we've developed affectionate nicknames for what we are: Mendi Lewis Obadike coined us "Monk-ease." Jaci Jones LaMon simply calls us BREAD. So what are we, exactly? We've become an information source, a writers exchange and a living record of our times. MonkeyBREAD is an online writers collective that operates as a listserv through Yahoo!Groups. Our mission is to host dialogue that inspires writing through exercises, constructive feedback, publishing opportunities and online discussion and by providing a safe space for writers who have traditionally been neglected in mainstream media. While we welcome exchange with all writers, our primary focus is on craft and development issues for writers of color. We have had extensive chat about the many things that help us grow as writers. Members write in many different genres, but our exercises have been primarily centered around poetry. Membership, extended twice yearly in November and May, is free and processed by invitation from the moderator, referral by a member, or indication of interest by a candidate. To initiate membership, please see our contact page. |
