A View from a Watcher's POV Well another week... and things look very interesting.
Let's begin this column with a (silent) prayer for Chris & Eve to get
together (at last!). There, prayer over. Yes, this week
was a must-see week for Chris and Eve fans everywhere, and at long last,
a clear indication that the writing team IS doing their homework when it
comes to these characters. Yes we know
Should Eve marry Chris? As a C&E-er, most definitely. As the jeweler says, "It works out better if you're friends first." And you don't need to tell me this. This twist in the story points in the direction of Chris' humanity. At he times he can be a reptile, and at others, he can be a human being, and this should be a big selling point for Chris to Eve. However, it's also Eve' logical choice! She made a promise to let Ian go, and hopefully she will stick to it. The only person that can help her is Chris. An exaggeration here, an exaggeration there, and Chris and Eve have their ready-made life with no questions asked. As much as Chris and Eve need to hang out more as characters on the canvas, Eve needs to return to her conartist ways! And despite one quick little future encounter with Ian (in dreams), she shouldn't let that derail Chris' generous overture! As predicted, the Frank/Karen story is moving along well. With Scott coming back (briefly) to the canvas on this side of town should help bring the loose ends caused by Frank to return to the security they experience since that fateful day a few weeks ago when Karen all of a sudden vanished. It should be interesting as Frank dives into the past, and if the network was smart, they should mix in some real 1973 footage from GH! That would certainly put things over the top! And great news for me (and fellow armchair
critics)! The Labines have been let go from Guiding Light.
Yes, it's bad news for the Labine family, but it could be good news for
ABC. The network has two choices: 1) ABC could send the
Labines to Pine Valley (AMC) and fix a very screwed up soap town as of
late. In my column last week, I mentioned that AMC's chances were
slim to take home best show due to VERY poor writing. OR 2)
ABC engages the Labines to (return to) Port Charles and begin writing their
own book. I've secretly thought that the Labines AND Wendy Riche
(GH's former EP) came up
Speaking of that very topic, let's explore
part 2. This week Supporting actors and Younger actors.
These 4 categories have played a party in Daytime's past, present, and
future. Older stars playing long-time favorites are taken out
of mothballs it seems and are given a story (the
Here are the nominees, and what I think about them: Best Supporting Actress:
Rebecca Budig (GREENLEE, AMC).
No other character has been all over the map like Budig's Greenlee Smythe!
Being all over the map isn't so bad as long as you can pull it off, and
Budig has. Whether it's with Leo or Ryan, or cooking up some
scheme to get with either man (even Jake!), Budig can do it. However, day
after day of Greenlee with nominated sidekick Leo, during
Colleen Zenk Pinter (BARBARA, ATWT).
After years of kicking around Oakdale, this diva is getting some long overdue
recognition. Could she win? Maybe, but competition from her
very own show could make her chances slim, but
Maura West (CARLY, ATWT). This strawberry blonde damsel started out in typical bad girl fashion: ruining big sis' chances at love with her very own man! It seems like a very long time ago since this bad girl liked Mike for herself. Gone are big sister and the man she tried to steal. All that remains is Carly now a mother (played by Ms. West). Enough said. Lesli Kay (MOLLY, ATWT). Lesli Kay, like Maura West, has taken their character from a background bad girl who would throw a grenade right into good-guy with good-girl story to woman we can love and adore as the heroine. Molly's departure into getting intimately involved with her daughter's man caused for some problems while hooking with Bay City's Jake McKinnon has made things better. Kay's chances of winning are okay, but with a big ATWT presence in this category, West or Pinter could win. But then again, overkill could make those Vixens from the Valley more likely winners! Who's not here?
Best Supporting Actor:
Michael E. Knight (TAD, AMC).
This is a more solid choice for a winner. Knight's been a winner here,
and with Tad's atypical yet familiar
Hunt Block (CRAIG, ATWT).
For those of you who don't know, Mr. Block actually had three roles last
year. Should he win? Yes. Can he win? Yes. Will
he win? Maybe. Block has been around a long time, and perhaps
at long last, he will succeed. Whether it is a snake
lawyer in Springfield, or an evil Horse whisperer in Pine Valley, or Mr.
Manipulation, Block is a busy
Benjamin Hendrickson (HAL, ATWT).
Whether it's exchanging barbs with Craig or keeping tabs on ex-wife Barb
or former squeeze Carly (all nominated), Hal has been a constant figure
in Oakdale. Hendrickson is a good actor, but
Michael Park (JACK, ATWT). Not a threat, but then again, don't underestimate a dark horse! Who's not here?
Younger Actress:
Terri Conn (KATIE, ATWT).
Like big TV brother Craig, Katie knows how to walk the walk. Her
attempts to get Holden may have gone awry, but the not so simple Simon,
who works for Big Brother Craig seems like a great catch.
Kristina Sisco (ABIGAIL, ATWT).
In just a few short years, Molly's baby daughter (once a hot story) grew
up and met Chris Hughes, who spent the night with Momma Molly.
A new version of an ATWT classic (Craig was once involved with Lucinda
and Sierra, mom and daughter, at the same time a long time ago), Abigail
survived. But Sisco win? Not likely... but it depends
Annie Parisse (JULIA, ATWT). Jack's former main squeeze is a good actress, but more a plot point in the story rather than a character point, she doesn't seem to be a threat. Actually, none of the Oakdale women here do. Adrienne Frantz (AMBER, B&B).
As a reflection of former mother-in-law Brooke, Amber has done everything
to stay in the good graces of the Forresters, including Brooke.
After being a thorne in Brooke's side (rather than the other Thorn!), it's
about time this part of the story got some recognition. But Frantz's
work a couple of years ago should have been
Who's not here?
Younger Actor:
Paul Taylor (ISAAC, ATWT). Okay actor, but an unknown. Justin Torkildsen (RICK, B&B). Looks like his predecessor, sounds like his predecessor, but isn't his predecessor, and since his predecessor didn't win this trophy when up against the actor he succeeded, don't expect this successor to win either. Josh Ryan Evans (TIMMY, PASSIONS).
As the show's sole nom, and being the most versatile character on daytime,
the actor could walk away with a big prize! However, more compelling
stories from the Y&R could leave poor Timmy
David Tom (BILLY, Y&R). This teenage alcoholic character could succeed like his sister (Heather Tom, VICTORIA, Y&R) in winning an award. Also, Billy is torn between two women: a woman who schemed to get him and another who is the granddaughter of his Mother's greatest rival. Sounds like fun! David Lago (RAUL, Y&R).
With Raul's mysterious illness not out in the open, and a lot of good acting
this spring, Lago is in fine shape to take home the gold. Buddy Billy
(David Tom) also nominated also helps in his campaign.
Who's not here?
Who's not here? Who cares who's not here? All
in all, the Emmy awards look pretty routine. Let's see who will win.
Some categories look straight forward, but don't count out the surprises.
Remember, it's just a view from
