The
Man With a Hidden Heart
Ironically
Wearing His Heart On His Sleeve
It’s the kind of scene that makes you want
to scream. A character is revealing themselves in ways that anyone
can see, emotions are projected. Words are spoken without a voice
giving them life. One person speaks, reacts, winces, quickly back-peddles……what
do all of these things say? They say that we are bearing witness
to a scene where a man does his best to conceal his true feelings.
There has never been a better of example of such behavior as was displayed
Monday on Port Charles.
Chris Ramsey fell in love with Eve Lambert
a long time ago. While some might call his attraction a crush, the
portrayal of Chris’ inner emotions by the talented Nolan North led this
viewer to believe that it was a much
deeper sentiment. He has always been
the character who thinks of himself before others, looking out for number
one. But there emerged one person he looked out for before number
one…..that one person was Eve Lambert.
Chris opened his heart to Eve in a way he’s
never done before. He allowed her to know him, the real him beneath
all the scheming and manipulation, when he’s never allowed anyone to get
that close to him. While Chris did
feel some emotion towards Julie, she could
never replace Eve in his thoughts. When Eve was in danger or in trouble
or ever needed his assistance, married or not, Chris was ready to risk
all for his distant love.
And so he proved again Monday when he risked
himself in perhaps the greatest gamble of all……he asked Eve to marry him.
Was it a simple gesture of friendship to provide a stable environment for
Baby Lambert? For some who haven’t watched his devotion to Eve, it
might seem like a well-calculated ploy on the part of Chris. To this
viewer, it was Chris way of making that long awaited first step towards
his greatest happiness.
Chris didn’t tell Eve that he loved her, but
he did everything he could to avoid the subject. Never was it more
obvious than during the following exchange:
Eve: “But we’re not in love.”
Chris: (pause….wounded look) “I know
you’re in love with Ian. I’m not expecting you to forget that overnight.
All I’m asking for is a shot…(pause….regrouping)…At a family….at a life.”
Hmmm, one must ask the question, does Chris
really want a chance at a life? Or is he finally giving himself a
chance at love? It’s no secret that he’s pined for her from afar.
He has continually denied his feelings
to Eve after she’d asked him point blank,
but he didn’t want to lose her presence in his life. His love for
her has evolved into a greater kind of love. I’m almost reminded
of the medieval concept of chivalry, as a knight gives himself to defend
a lady’s honor at great cost to himself. Chris has sacrificed time
and time again to save Eve or to provide for her happiness. He has
watched her at a distance and been her supportive and brutally honest friend.
Has that era finally come to an end?
Is Chris finally ready to allow his feelings
a freer voice? Monday’s episode proved that while Chris may be ready
to draw Eve back into his life and protect and rescue her again, he isn’t
quite ready to lay down his sword and shield quite yet. His emotional
armor is still quite well intact as he covered his tracks quickly and gave
her logical reasoning for his proposal of marriage, never once faltering
back into emotional bonds.
However, I happen to think there is a chink
in Chris’ suit of emotional armor. He wants to believe. He
wants the fairy tale. He wants the dream of true love. He wants
someone to love him for the true him, and he wants
that someone to be Eve. While Eve is
his great love, in truth, she is also his greatest enemy.
While Eve mulls over her future and the decisions
she must make, Chris is left to dream on, only sharpening the knife that
might deliver his fatal wound. Chris declares himself a realist,
but to watch him is to know that he is a dreamer. The long torturous
days until he receives his answer might very well be his last as a man
with a heart.
The future can take many twists and turns……the
only one certain thing is that Eve holds Chris’ heart in her hands, and
she could be the one person meaning to do well by Chris only to destroy
what little remains of his
emotional well-being.
If Eve’s answer is yes, Chris will be overjoyed,
and he will set out to get Ian Thornhart out of town as soon as possible
to keep Eve by his own side. If her answer turns out to be no….as
this viewer speculates it will be……the biggest question of all will be…..Can
Chris survive this latest and harshest blow to his heart and just who will
he lash out at for revenge? The only way to find out is to keep watching
Port Charles and to hope that Chris might get his slice of heaven than
he’s wished for his entire life.
