THE CALHOUNIAN
CALHOUN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
1939 YEARBOOK
WEST VIRGINIA

Bill Kight

William J. Kight, Sr. (above) was born January 5, 1925. He attended Calhoun County High School, and he kindly gave me pages from his 1939 Calhounian with the photos of my dad, the late Gordon Gail Keith, who was a senior when Bill was a freshman. Bill then lent me the entire book to scan and post here. He passed away in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 14, 2003, and his family gave me the yearbook to keep.

Each page is linked below. For speedier loading, I converted the text pages from graphic reproductions to plain text.

My mother is in this book as well as my dad. Ruth Douglas (the late Ruth Douglas Keith Boggs) was a freshman along with Bill Kight. My dad's younger sister, the late Audrey Keith, is on the junior class page. I also have some cousins on both my mom's and dad's side among these students, but haven't attempted to identify them all. I would be very happy to hear from anyone who's related, or if you find someone you know in these pages. E-mail me, Rhonda Keith, at [email protected]. I have another web page with a bit of history about some of my Calhoun County relatives: http://www.geocities.com/rondaria, and at the bottom of this page there's a link to my family tree.

HOW TO VIEW THE PHOTOS

Photos will appear in two different ways when you click on the underlined link:

  • Some photos open within this Web site, and the pictures may appear very large at first, then go back to a screen-size photo. Then, depending on your browser, a little box with arrows may appear in the lower right corner of the photo after a few seconds. If you click on that box, you will get a larger image.
  • Some photos are at www.flickr.com/photos/cchs1939. You can order prints from Flickr.
  • If you click on links to many of the photos, you may get a message saying that you've temporarily exceeded the quota for downloading (or viewing) pictures on this site. Just wait a while, and you'll be able to continue. This is a free Yahoo site and the server has its limits.

I am not able to supply any images other than those already posted, but you are welcome to copy or print any photos you find here, or order prints of the photos in the attached album from Yahoo.

I don't know on what system the senior photos were arranged; it's not alphabetical, so here I have listed all those names in the order they appear on each page, and listed the names as the type on the photo pages is hard to read. Names of students in the other classes are listed in a separate page.

I included the title page to show the style. The black and white pages all have the same border you see on The Calhounian cover page, but on the other pages I have cropped the border. Unfortunately there wasn't enough space on the server to include reproductions of all the ads.

*My mother, Ruth Douglas, took math from Mr. Stump, and wrote the following poem about his class. She remembers that he was amused, and copied it on the blackboard.

When the day dawns dark and dreary
And you're feeling bleak and weary
And you're up in Mr. Stump's room
You'll be sure you've met your doom.
For he never stops nor tarries
To bawl out Tom, Dick, and Harry,
And if he should find you shirking
He'll scream, "Could I find you working!"
And I get so tired of sitting
While my Math 9 I am getting.
If I had a bit of spunk
I would ignore him and flunk!
