Foreword

(When The Doctor Says, "Alzheimer's")

I was pleased to meet Betty and Bernie Weiss when they came to one of my book signings in Manhattan Beach, California. Betty had already been a caregiver for her beloved Bernie for many years, and the tender love they shared was easy to see--even though the ravages of Alzheimer's was slowly taking him away from her. My eyes filled with sorrowful tears, because I knew very well the pain Betty was in, as I was in the process of losing both of my parents to Alzheimer's as well.

As we eagerly shared our trials and tribulations, I was reminded that the vast knowledge that caregivers learn along the way must be written down and passed on--because the lessons are invaluable for others, and particularly for those who are starting the journey.

Many professionals have written books on caregiving, but unless they have experienced it, their level of compassion and understanding can't compare to someone who has been up all night with a loved one who is disoriented and wandering. Doctors will tell you what to expect, how to deal with challenging behaviors, suggest that you no longer allow your loved one to drive, but it is quite another thing when you are actually fighting for the car keys, and feeling overwhelmed by the emotional, mental and physical toll that caregiving takes.

I congratulate Betty for sharing her extensive knowledge,
which she earned the hard way, and for creating this
wonderful resource that offers practical solutions to help make caregiving a little easier. I know you will enjoy it--it is written from her heart.
