07 May 2003, 15:00 - Solar Transits
|
 Above:
Solar transit Mercury (appears as a tiny black dot) sliding in front
of the sun.
|
Transit
of mercury, where mercury passes across the disk of
the sun, happens once in a decade. This year, the
transit will begin on 7th May 2003 at 13:13 local
time. The maximum eclipse will occur at 15:51:03 LT.
This exceptional event will last for 5 hours and 12
minutes and will end at sunset
|
August 2003 - Mars comes closer to Earth
|
The
red planet, Mars, will lies closest to Earth (55.76
million kilometers from Earth) on August 27.
Consequently, this year Mars appears brighter shining
at magnitude -2.9. Martian surface detail and polar
caps can be observed with a small telescope. Mars will
begin to fade by the beginning of October 2003
|
