Chrono Trigger - Endings

Chrono Trigger has 12 main endings, plus several variations on the last two endings. There are also two semi-endings, "Magus Victorious", and "The Futures Destruction" that play when you lose certain battles. They don't count as one of the twelve true endings. You can unlock different endings depending on when you beat the game, which is what this page will discuss.

Beyond Time
Extras Unlocked: New Game Plus mode, Endings Menu
This is the ending you get if you fight Lavos after going through the entire story. It has the Millennial Fair last night celebration moonlight parade, and shows everyone saying their farewells. The ending can differ slightly depending on the following:
-Whether or not you killed Magus in the Dark Ages
-Whether you saved Lara (Lucca's mom) inn the forest sidequest
-How you chose to fight Lavos. If you fflew the Epoch into it, the Epoch will be destroyed and you'll get a different variation on the ending, vice-versa if you used the magical bucket to fight Lavos.
-How many cats you got by the end of thee game. (Refer to the Sidequests section for more info)

Magus Victorious
If you lose to Magus in the Middle Ages, he'll summon Lavos.

The Futures Destruction
Any time you lose to Lavos (except in the unavoidable encounter in the Ocean Palace), you'll see the future being destroyed, and your efforts going for nothing.

Reunion Ending
Extras Unlocked:  New Game Plus mode, Art Gallery, Present Monster Data
An ending where nobody except Lucca and Marle wants to save Crono. Of course, that would be a bad ending, and we can't have that! In the end, everyone comes back and goes to resurrect him. This ending can also be slightly different depending on whether or not you got Magus, and whether or not you used the Epoch.
To get this ending, fight Lavos after defeating Dalton but before saving Crono.

The Dream Project
Extras Unlocked: Middle Ages Monster Data, Triple Techs in Tech Showcase
To get this ending, you must be in New Game Plus mode. Go to the Millennial Fair and when you first reach the screen where Lucca is showing off her invention, run over to the right teleporter pad and push X near the little sparkle, which will open up a special time portal straight to Lavos, which wasn't in the normal mode. It shows many of Chrono Trigger's development team, and let's you talk to them!

The Successor of Guardia
Extras Unlocked: Future Monster Data, Single in Tech Showcase
Another ending obtainable only in New Game Plus. Defeat Lavos with only Crono and Marle by using the aforementioned shiny dot on Lucca's teleporter machine, before the trial after coming back from 600 AD. This ending has a little to do with Frog and Marle...

Good Night Ending
Extras Unlocked: Treasure Maps for Dark Ages and End of Time, Music Box songs 11-20
Fight Lavos as soon as you can at the End of Time after the old dude explains what the bucket does. The ending really isn't an ending at all, just a glorified credits screen. At least you get some nice extras...

"Legendary Hero" Ending
Extras Unlocked: Dark Ages monster data, Music Box songs 21-30
Defeat Zombor, but don't get the Hero Medal from Tata, and fight Lavos. The ending involves Tata, the new Legendary Hero.

The Unknown Past
Extras Unlocked: Treasure Map for Present, Music Box songs 31-40
Watch Tata get chased out of the Denadoro Mts, and then go talk to him and get the Hero Medal back. Fight Lavos at this time, and you'll see the effects of not completing two time periods.

People of the Times
Extras Unlocked: Treasure Maps for Middle Ages, Music Box songs 41-50
To get this ending, go to the End of Time and fight Lavos through the Time Gate after defeating Azala, but before going forward into the Dark Ages for the first time. It's the ending for all the non-playable characters you may have met in the game. Yay, they finally receive the recognition they so richly deserve!

The Oath
Extras Unlocked: Music Box songs 51-60
Defeat Lavos just after giving Frog the Masamune and when he joins your team. Frog will take on Magus in a one on one battle for revenge.

Dino Age
Extras Unlocked: Prehistoric period monster data, Future period treasure maps
After defeating Magus and being transported into the prehistoric age, return through the Mystic Mts to the end of time before following Ayla to the Laruba Ruins. This ending is pretty funny, showing the possibility that dino-things rule the earth!

What the Prophet Seeks...
Extras Unlocked: Dual Techs in Tech Showcase, Prehistoric Age treasure maps
Defeat Lavos after Tyrano Lairs destruction, but before Schala opens the magic seal at the Ocean Palace. This ending is devoted entirely to Magus, as he weighs the events before him, and prepares for a one-on-one confrontation with Lavos.

A Slide Show?
Extras Unlocked: Boss Data, Music Box songs 61-69
To get this ending, follow Schala until she opens the seal into the Ocean Palace, BUT DON'T TOUCH THE MAMMON MACHINE! Defeat Lavos, and you'll get to view this rather humorous ending, where Lucca and Marle talk about many many events in the game that NEVER HAPPENED! Plus, for a one time only, you get to hear Crono actually say something!

And there you have it. After unlocking all these endings on the PSX version, your system file should be completed. Good Luck getting them all, all it takes is time and patience (and high levels, of course...).
