[Syllabus][Adventure][Ranks]

This sections covers all the basic adventurous activities in the ATC

What are these activities?

During a cadet's career, there will be opportunities for flying, fieldcraft, shooting, outdoor sports and completion of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

All of these activities are run either at squadron level, or at wing level and there are plenty of chances for cadets to get involved in each activity.

Here is a brief explanation of what each activity may encompass.

  •   Flying - cadets from the age of 14 have the opportunity for Air Experience Flights (AEF) in the Grob Tutor. This can range from a simple explanation of controls and how the aircraft works, to aerobatics! From the age of 17 there is the opportunity to apply for a flying scholarship, and obtain a Private Pilots Licence. Also available is the chance to fly in either the Viking, a tow-launched glider, or the Vigilant, a motor-glider.
  •  Shooting - part of the First Class training syllabus involves weapons training on the No.8 target rifle. This covers everything a cadet needs to know about the rifle, with safety being paramount. Also cadets may move onto the L98, the cadet, single shot version of the armed forces SA80. Shooting normally takes place on an indoor range, of about 25m in length.
  •  Fieldcraft - this speaks for itself, and is a part of most squadrons in the corps. Cadets learn basic field tactics in a safe, and controlled environment. This is the extended to include leadership exercises, and initiative tasks as cadets gain experience.
  •  Sports - throughout the year inter-squadron sports events are held. From football to athletics, and netball to swimming. These account for a major part of the inter-squadron competitions, and everyone is encouraged to take part in them.
  •  Duke of Edinburgh - the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is run through all wings, and is a nationally accredited scheme. For more information visit www.theaward.org
