More Real Time Control of the ASR-X

The following is my response to a post on the ASR-X Mailing List regarding Real Time Control of the ASR-X with a Yamaha AN1x.

> I'm about ready to finally set up my AN1x to control the X via CCs. Aside from the obvious Filter Cutoff and Resonance controllers, anyone have any suggestions about what other parameters might be cool to mess with via the AN1x's knobs and its very cool ribbon controller?

I've set up the Assign Knobs on my AN1x as follows (notice that the MIDI CC values on the AN1x are not identical to the equivalent ASR-X reception value; this reflects the difference between Yamaha and Ensoniq's implementation of the MIDI spec):

Knob 1 = 073: AEG Atk (this controls the Amplitude Env Generator Attack level on the ASR-X)

Knob 2 = 076: ------- (this controls the Amplitude Env Generator Decay level on the ASR-X)

Knob 3 = 072: AEG Rel (this controls the Amplitude Env Generator Release level on the ASR-X)

Knob 4 = 011: Express (this controls the Expression Controller on the ASR-X)

Knob 5 = 074: VCF Cut (this controls the Filter Cutoff on the ASR-X)

Knob 6 = 077: ------- (this controls the Filter Resonance on the ASR-X)

Knob 7 = 075: AEG Dcy (this controls the Normal LFO Rate on the ASR-X)

Knob 8 = 091: RevSend (this controls the FX Bus Select on the ASR-X)

Note that Knob 7 (as configured above) does not produce an audible effect by itself - in most cases this value interacts with the Mod Wheel value transmitted to the ASR-X.

Sometimes I alter the settings of Knobs 7 & 8 to 010 and 070, respectively, to control Pan and Patch Select. I'd much rather assign 071 to a foot switch but I've not yet picked up an extra pedal. Other times, I assign RBNX to 074: VCF Cut and RBNZ to 077: ------- (for Filter Resonance). I've also taken a liking to assigning MW to 091: RevSend rather than an Assign Knob.

I'll probably settle on using Knobs 7 & 8 for SysCTRL1-4 and assign some unused MIDI CC values to control the effects. Remember that the effects real time control can EASILY be set-up to respond to Velocity, +-MIDKey#'s, Pressure, Pitch & Mod Wheel, etc. (see pg. 45 of the Reference Manual) so you don't necessarily have to use one of the four SysCTRL parms!
