Triggering an 'Infinite' Loop

April 28, 2003 ~ A frequently asked question: How to trigger an 'infinite' drum loop from a Pad in a RAM-kit?

The ASR-X will not playback a looped sample an infinite number of times - it will only playback the looped sample for the duration of ENV3.

  1. Under Pad/Edit, set WAVE 'Play Mode =LoopForward'
  2. Set ENV3 'Envelope Mode = Finish'
  3. Set ENV3 'Decay Time (4)= 99'
  4. Adjust ENV3 'Release Time (5)= xx' to taste.

It's important to understand, when ENV3 'Envelope Mode = Finish' and the Decay Time (4) interval is complete, the envelope moves immediately to the Release Time (5) stage bypassing the Sustain Level (4) stage altogether.

The preferred method for working with loops of set measures in most hardware and software samplers is to retrigger the loop every few measures. This prevents the inevitable timing drift that will occur when trying to synchronize a 2-4 measure drum loop with other performances.

If you still prefer to use the 'Infinite' loop method, you'll find it useful to create a Key Group assignment so that two or more sounds can cut each other off.

  1. Under Pad/Edit, set MISC 'Key Group Assign= xx ' where xx = 1-16
  2. Make the identical Key Group assignment to one or more Pads in your RAM-kit

Now any of the Pads sharing the same Key Group assignment will mute the others.
