BRENDA ROY

"Vessel"
21cm h x 8cm x 8cm slate, silver, leopard jasper, red jasper

This piece is simply a vessel that could be used to contain a portion of someone’s ashes or memorial objects. For me, even though the form is quite contemporary, the use of stone evokes the idea of some of the megalithic burial structures, anchoring our modern lives within the cycles of history.
Two things struck me when thinking about the 21st century North American relationship to death and dying. One is that we have lost so many of the rituals and ceremonies that were once used to mark ALL of the major passages of our life. The second, perhaps partly as a result of the first, is that we have become very removed from death. We tend to be very uncomfortable with the whole subject and no longer know how to deal with its inevitable presence in our lives
