All nationalities, except British, require a visa to enter UAE, and visas are normally issued in UAE.  There are three types of visas:

  • Transit Visa:This is arranged by companies and hotels, and is valid for 15 days only
  • Visit Visa:This is arranged by companies and relatives, and is valid for 60 days, and may be extended for another 30 days on the payment of 500 Dirhams
  • Resident/Employment Visa:There are two categories of this visa:
For domestic help i.e. gardeners, cooks, maids, drivers etc., the visa is valid for 2 years.
Employment or Sponsorship visa for higher categories is valid for 3 years.
Anyone with either of these two visas can stay for the above respective period continuously, and if they leave the country within this period, they cannot stay out for more than six months, or the visa will be cancelled.

For employment, a minimum standard of qualification, including a bachelor's degree(in most cases) in the relevant field, is required. If you want your family to join you, you must have a minimum salary of 3500/-dhs monthly, plus accommodation plus transport from your employer, or a minimum of Dhs. 5000/- per month. No expat may hire more than one domestic helper, unless he/she draws a minimum of Dhs.6500/-  per month, and must also pay an annual fee for the helper of Dhs.5000/-.
