Santiago's White Horse

The small town of Clavijo is located to 17 km of Logroño,
in a rocky stop on which are the rest of the castle, comprises of
the legend around the Way of Santiago
The legend tells that during the
battle of king Ramiro I against the Muslims to abolish the tribute
of
the One hundred Maidens, apostle Santiago appeared to him mounted
in his white horse and he helped him to win in the fight.

Hawk and the Dove
Account the tradition
that the king Don Garcia, worried because the Arabs had conquered
Calahorra, left hunting with his hawk, which persecuting to
a partridge, was entered in a cave and the king was in his looks
for. In the interior he found an image of the Virgin with the
Child, an ignited lamp, a vase with lilies, a bell and the two
birds peacefully alighted. The king thought that the fact was
an omen of his victory and when he reconquered Calahorra commanded
to raise a monastery in honor to St. Maria.

Military order of the Knights of the Terrace or the Jarretera,
one of oldest of Spain. The vase with the lilies is since then
symbol of the mariana invocation.

Miracle
of the Cock and the Hen
One of the legend
more known the jacobea tradition is the called "Miracle
of the cock and the hen". It tells the tradition,
that to Santo Domingo of the Calzada, arrived a German
marriage, with his son Hugonell of eighteen years. The
girl of the inn where they were stayed, fell in love
with the young person, but before the indifference of
the boy, she decided to take revenge itself. He put
a glass of silver in the boy's luggage and when the
travelling ones followed their way, the girl denounced
the robbery to the corregidor. The laws of then (Law
of Alfonso X the Wise person) punished with capital
punishment the robbery and once caught, the travelling
innocent was hanged person.

When the parents returned from Santiago found to their son miraculously
alive, thanks to the intervention of Santo Domingo. They went
to house of the Corregidor and they told the prodigy him. Incredulous
he answered to them that "his son was as alive as the cock
and the hen that he arranged himself to eat". Then, the
cock and the hen covered themselves with pens, jumping of the
plate and they begin themselves to sing.
In memory of this event, they stay an
alive cock and a hen, always of white color, in a henhouse inside
the cathedral. They are changed every month and is frequent
to hear sing the cock. |
