Aaardvarks Coblers Mondays Spring2004

Genesis: Coblers Monday were originally Mick Haywood, Alan Perks and Mike Stather, widely experienced three stalwarts of Whitby Folk Club.
The group was formed in 1996 in readiness to perform sea songs and shanties for the visit to Whitby of the replica HM Bark Endeavour in 1997.
The group name was derived from the custom of some Whitby  coble fishermen not to put to sea after a weekend's over indulgence. The practice of returning to the Towns hostelries for a reviving 'hair of the dog', was known locally as a 'Coblers Monday'.
The vastly experienced trios wide ranging repertoire included Seafaring Songs, Sailors Chants, etc. usually performed unaccompanied .

2001: The groups numbers continue to swell, Fresh to 'The Coblers' throng is Mick Green, ex RN, RC, and now Administrator of the Captain Cook Memorial Museum

The group entertained a stunned audience to an exhibition of sword dancing at the Saturday night session they were hosting at the Moor and Coast Festival in May. June found them entertaining locals and visitors alike on Whitby Bandstand during the visit of the Grand Turk to Whitby.
July found the group recording for Yorkshire TV's "Claytons Coast".
2002 was quite a busy year. Coblers Monday were invited, by English Heritage, in February to provide examples of local sea songs and shanties as part of the audio-visual display at the new Whitby Abbey Visitor Centre.Coinciding with the opening at Easter of the Visitors Centre was the launch of the 40% replica Bark Endeavour and they group were asked to also provide songs and do voiceovers for the onboard Captain Cook Experience. So whether your up at the Abbey or down by the Bandstand in Whitby you'd find it hard to miss Coblers Monday's dulcet tones entertaining? the tourists, locals and seagulls alike.

The recordings were made with great haste one early April Sunday morn at Whitby's Captain Cook Memorial Museum, these warts and all recordings were never intended as an album but owing to numerous requests for copies it was decided to release it in its entirety, and "Whitby Cured" was spawned.

May found the troop making their annual appearance at the Moor and Coast Festival and also ably assisting with the celebrations at Mick Haywood's Sixtieth Shindig.
Mid June found our gallant crew at Liverpool for the
Mersey International Shanty Festival performing on the
Square Riggers" Earl of Pembroke, Zebu, Kaskelot and
Grand Phoenix and rounding off with a final song spot on the Mersey Ferry.
Whitby's Coblers Monday  featured on both Yorkshire and
Tyne Tees Television, released the CD "Whitby Cured" , They were also featured in a film, Shown in Whitby's major Cinema Complex, of Whitby Folk Clubs Night on the Grand Turk.

Making 2002 a very good year in deed.
