Jesus saw great beauty in the natural world, and he loved to speak of what he saw. He used these images to exemplify and clarify the wonders of God. The Lilies of the field must be one of the most beautiful and truly serene images that Christ used. One day He was talking to His disciples, telling them a parable about a rich man who had an abundant harvest. The man was so delighted with himself and felt that he had so much in reserve that he could 'eat drink and be merry' - for many years he would not have to worry. Jesus tells that the rich man would die that very night and that he would not be able to take any of his great wealth with him. All that he had set aside in his store houses would now belong to another man.So often we get carried away with working to acquire wealth and possessions. Having nice things and setting aside plenty in reserve, becomes the primary aim of life. Striving in this way takes the emphasis off what is truly valuable and beautiful in life. Living for material gain can cause us great unhappiness as many worry that they may never be successful. Jesus tells his disciples that God already knows all our needs and this is aptly demonstrated in nature. We need only look at the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, they worry not about the future, yet even the most glorious of the kings of Israel could not compare to their beauty.Jesus wants His disciples to set their heart on the Kingdom of God, to live in a way that is different to that of man. Wherever a man stores his treasure, his heart will always long to be there. Luke 12:27-31
