This play, presented here by Gomito Productions
was created especially for the International Connections Festival
at the National Theatre in July 2001.
The two writers, Ed Emery and Richard Fredman, previously collaborated
in 1999 on their enormously successful production of Dario Fo’s
raucous and irreverent The Devil in Drag.
This time they team up to investigate the
complexities of the Greek response to the oldest Jewish community in Europe and
to its decimation at the hands of the Nazis.
Salonica had been a Jewish city since the time of St Paul and still was
at the time of WW2. An excellent cast
bring it to exuberant life, with Sephardi music, Greek puppetry and energetic
ensemble playing. Although clearly a
serious and historical subject, the authors have chosen to view it through the
lens of other stories, some comic and some dramatic. In particular, they
have involved the orchestrated mania of the Greek Karaghiozis puppet
theatre.
"I saw Les Juifs de Salonique last year at the
National Theatre. I was
bowled over by its passion, invention and wit. It was
breathtakingly slick,
and the technical
ability of all those involved was outstanding….
People will be
moved to laugh and cry at this fabulous piece… "
“Les Juifs de Salonique… a sophisticated and
highly successful
exploration through
Brechtian framework of the relationships between
young actors here and
now and a group of Jewish amateur actors in
Salonica during
their persecution in the Second World War…
impressive
performances and a deep understanding…

For Emery (half Greek) and Fredman
(Jewish), this is a deeply personal journey into a territory virtually
untouched by all the artistic and literary excursions into the Jewish
Holocaust. The play is written and
performed in English.
