08-Jan: An Iranian Navy Hudong-class fast-attack craft; has test-fired a C-802 anti-ship cruise missile for the first time. The firing took place at the end of the 10 day 'Victory-7' exercise staged around the Strait of Hormuz.
April: Islamic regime acquires computer software from N.Korea to fabricate missiles. N.Korea sent its technicians to help in the development of an extended version of the Taepo-dong
23-May: N.Korea test-fires a new antiship cruise missile (ASCM) designated by the West as the AG-1. This new missile is a derivative of the Russian Styx/Chinese Silkworm (both of which N.Korea already produces). The range of the AG-1 is believed to be approximately 120-160 km/75-99 miles. Once fully developed it will be offered for sale to Iran.
30-Jul: Islamic regime's "moderate President" Hashemi Rafsanjani inaugurates a production line for domestically manufactured [Zolfaghar] main battle tanks and [Boragh] tracked armored personnel carriers identified as the BMT-2.
03-Sep: Ayat-Allah's Islamic Revolutionary Guards mounts live-fire exercises near the border with Afghanistan, the second round of such maneuvers conducted in the region in recent weeks.
Sep Islamic regime's Shahab-3 and Shahab-4 ballistic missile programs have benefited from N.Korea's assistance. Islamic regimes has received "at least a dozen" Nodong missiles from N.Korea.
09-Oct: The Islamic regime reports to have reversed engineered its first jet strike fighter. The Azarakhsh (Lightning) may have been manufactured in Russia or China before being assembled in Iran.
29-Oct: Islamic regime announces deployment of Striker surface to air missile system with a range of 250 kms.
23-Nov: China and N.Korea send a joint-team of technicians to Iran to work on the final stages of the latter's ballistic missile program. The program involves more than 100 Chinese and N.Korean technicians with the goal of giving Iran the indigenous capability to build ballistic missiles by the middle of 1998. The technicians are working to extend the range of the Nodong missile beyond 1,000 miles.
