Christiansburg - Gracie Mae Lawson Southern age 87, of Rt 6, died Sunday, July 1, 1990 at her home. She was preceeded in death by her Husband, John Wesley Southern; two sons James William Southern and Robert Lee Southern; and one daughter Ida Mae Linkous. Surviving are eight sons and daughter-in-laws four daughters and sons-in-law, one brother, and five sisters. -------snip---- 34 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren. Funeral will be 3pm Tuesday from the Faith Missionary Baptist Church conducted by Rev B O Burch, with burial in the Linkous Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Richardson- Horne Funeral Home.

Pilot- Laura Catherine Jewell, age 70 died Monday(2-18-1991) in a Roanoke Hospital. She is Survived by her husband Frank Jewell; two daughters Imogene Cunningham ; Betty Carolyn Jewell Pilot; four sons Jesse Irvin Jewell and Douglas Wayne Jewell both of Pilot; Ralph Junior Jewell Christiansburg, Va and Larry Ray Jewell , Raligh Nc, ; Four sisters Lillie Bell Hale, Mary Lee Goodman, Josie Young, and Judy Harmon, two brothers, Tommy Howard and Lawrence Howard, fifteen grandchildren and thirteen greatgrandchildren, Funeral service will be at 2pm Thursday at the Mayberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd with the Rev. James R Kittinger and Hugh Edward Howard officiating. Burial will be in the Huffville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Wednesday at the Maybery Funeral Home.


JEWELL, William Frank, 85, of Pilot, passed away Saturday, August 15, 1998, in a Salem Hospital. Surviving are three sons, one daughter and 3 sisters 14 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd, with the Rev. James Kittinger and the Rev. J. Edwin Bullock officiating. Burial will be in Huffville Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.


Feb. 22, 1971

Dwight Mallory Lawson 90 of 1903 Charlston Ave , Portsmouth Va died Sunday in a Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Mrs Kate Kirtley and the son of T.W. and Edna Tuttle Lawson. A native of Gloucseter Co. He lived in Portsmouth for 65 years. He was a shipfitter and retired from the Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va. He was Presbyterian.

Surviving are a daughter Mrs Catherine Cain of Richmond, four sons Glenmore K Lawson, John F Lawson Sr., and Thomas C Lawson, Portsmouth, and George H Lawson of Crittendon , Va.and two brothers Thomas W Lawson of Long Island, NY, and V Herbert Lawson of Portsmouth, Va. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm. Tuesday in Snellings Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

James Shelburne Epperly died yesterday at his home in Floyd County, Va.

He is survived by his wife Alice G Epperly; a son James Roscoe Epperly, Riner , a daughter Mrs. Beverly Blakenship, Cambria, two brothers H H Epperly, Christiansburg, Va and A B Epperly , Pilot, Va. Five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 am. Tomorrow at the Richardsons Funeral Home with burial in the Hudgins Cemetery, Rogers, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Meador; parents, John R. and Clydie M. Jewell. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Dereck Meador, Kevin P. and Katherine C. Meador; grandchildren, Crystal Lynn Rogers, Samantha Ann Rogers, Jessica Nicole Meador; brothers, Homer A. Jewell, James E. Jewell; sister, Wanda J. Harmon; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 17, 1998 at 2 p.m. in Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Tom Cribb officiating. WILSON, Nellie Howard, 88, of Riner, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in a Radford hospital. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine Miller on February 28, 1999. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Charley and Joyce Howard of Riner; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Stella Kozar of Christiansburg, Melba Kozar, Lucy and George Hale, Annie and Richard Caldwell, Shirley and David Reed, Sandra and Ray Gibson, all of Riner; 35 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grand-children; and two sisters, Bessie Gruver of Riner and Ollie Gruver of Kansas. Funeral service Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Christiansburg Wesleyan Church with Rev. David Hurd officiating. Interment will be in the Howard Cemetery, Riner. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.


Robert Grimes

Portsmouth Va 4-12-1983 Robert "Casey"Stanley Grimes 56 of 153 Allen Road, a native of Portsmouth , died Monday in a Hospital.

He had retired from a job at Naval Air Rework Facility after 29 years. He was a member of Cradock Baptist Church, and a Navy vetran of WWII.

Survivors include a daughter, Glena J Wood of Dunn, Nc.; two sons, Kenneth R Grimes, and Sherwood C Grimes of Dunn, Nc.; a step-son Paul B Myers of Chesepeak; two sisters Marjorie A Griggs of Portsmouth, and Gloria L Carmichael of Birmingham, Al.; two brothers, Donald Earl Grimes of Portsmouth, and Dr. Gordon W Grimes of Colonial Heights; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at Sturtevant Funeral Home Chapel by Emory E Byrum. Burial will be in the Olive Branch Cemetery.

The Family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 today.

James "Jim" E Smith Sr. of Downingtown, Pa.

James"Jim" E Smith Sr. 54 of Downingtown, died on Saturday Feb 12, 1994 at Paoli Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of Rena Baxter Smith.

Born in North Whales, Pa he was the son of the late Clarence J Smith and Nellie V Byers.

He graduated from Conestoga High School.

He lived in West Chester before moving to Downingtown six years ago.

He was the owner and operator of J & R Trucking Enterprises in Downingtown.

He was a member of the Downingtown Area Drug and Alcohol Abuse Task Force.

In Addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters Vera Brooks and Lucy Edwards two sons James E "Jay" Smith Jr and James E "Jamie" Smith Jr. three stepsons Roy Thomson, Park Thomson, and Richard Thomson. three step-daughters Leigh Murray and Myra Newman and Melissa Boyer. a brother Ronald Smith two sisters Dorthea Mimmick, and Carol McCalaster. 16 grandchildren one great grand child and one step grand child.

He was preceeded in death by two brothers David and Roy Smith and a sister Loraine Resop.

Friends and relatives may call at the Smith's residence at 243 Moore Rd, Downingtown, noon to 4:00Pm on Saturday, Feb 19, 1994

Interment will be Private.

Mrs Jewell was preceeded in death by her husband, Harley Bishop; a daughter Yna Elizabeth Bishop; brother Ballard Jewell,; Harley Bishop Jr a sister Clydia Jewell, a grandson Danny Howard and a son-in-law Robert Howard.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday, May 29 at the Yurs Funeral Home, St Charles. The Rev. Larry Hilkemann will officiate. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery ,Arlington Heights . Visitation will be from 6-9 pm Thursday May 28, 1992 at the funeral home.

OAK HILL - Virginia Merle Howard Roberts, 79, of Oak Hill died Nov. 2, 1998, in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a long illness.

She was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church, Oak Hill.

Surviving: son, Roger Roberts of Dublin, Va.; daughters, Carolyn Mitchell of Jacksonville, N.C., Martha Roberts of Charleston; brother, Billy Ray Howard of San Antonio; sister, Edna Mae Ellickson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Burial will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home.


MILLER, Maxine Gay, 51, of Newport died Sunday morning, February 28, 1999, in Montgomery Regional Hospital after a long illness. Born in Montgomery County on March 14, 1947, she was a daughter of Nellie Howard Wilson and the late Charlie Rouster Howard. She was an avid racing fan, ever supporting Melvin Smith in his efforts. A brother, Early Ray Howard, and a sister, Bertha Virginia Howard, preceded her in death. Surviving are her mother, Nellie Jewell Howard Wilson of Floyd; her dearly beloved special friend of 18 years, Melvin Smith of Newport, who will greatly miss her; two daughters, Naomi Jean(Miller) Hurley of Elliston and Angela Marlene(Miller)Hoilman of Pilot; two granddaughters, Trista Lynn Clark and Travis JordonHurley; a brother, Charlie P. Howard of Riner; six sisters, Stella M.Kozar of Christiansburg, Melba J. Kozar of Riner, Lucy H. Hale of Floyd, Annie F. Caldwell, Shirley T. Reed, and Sandra H. Gibson, all of Riner. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church off Mud Pike Road with the Rev. David Hurd, the Rev. Noah Underwood, the Rev. Eddie Kendall, and the Rev. Wallace Yopp officiating. Burial will follow in the Howard Cemetery at Riner. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke on Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
MAJ. FRANCIS T. TYNAN Funeral services for Maj. Francis T. Tynan, who died Wednesday at his home in Cradock, were conducted this morning with requiem high mass from St. Paul's Catholic Church, with Rev. M. J. Molloy as the celebrant. Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert. E. O'Connor, W.A. Neville, Jr., Maj. J. M. Broughton, W. T. Robinson, Jr., P. J. Lyons, John J. Shea, Robert E. Glover and Godwin Parker. The services were attended by a detachment of Portsmouth police and representatives from Stonewall Camp, Confederate Veterans; St. Paul's Council, Knights of Columbus; the Holy Name Society, Catholic Knights of America and the Catholic Club. The services were largely attended and there were many floral designs. Major Tynan held membership in the Catholic Knights of America, St. Paul's Council, Knights of Columbus; the local Catholic Club and was an honorary member of Austin R. Davis Camp, united Spanish War Veterans and of Post 993, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enlisted in the confederate cause April 20, 1861, as a private in Company H, Third Virginia Regiment and served with distinction throughout the war, surrendering at Appomattox with General Lee with the rank of first sergeant. He participated in a great many battles, including Williamsburg, Seven Pines, White Oak Swamp, Hains Mill, Warrenton Springs, Second Manassas, Crampton Gap, Sharpsburg, Md., Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor, the Wilderness, Gettysburg and in the fighting around Richmond and Petersburg. Major Tynan is survived by his son, Frank C. Tynan, of Cradock; two daughters, Mrs. William E. Reiley, of Roanoke and Mrs. William A. Green, of this city; five grandchildren and many other relatives. He was widely known and liked.

CHRISTOPHER C. TYNAN

Christopher C. Tynan died at 12:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the residence of his daughter, Mrs. A. N. Mahoney, 421 Cooke Street, Park View, at the age of 71 years. He is survived by a widow and seven children -- the Misses Laura and Christine Tynan, Mr. C. Monroe, Mrs. John T. Thayer, Mrs. A. N. Mahoney, Mrs. C. H. Mahoney and J. Samuel Tynan. The funeral service will take place at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning in St. Paul's Catholic Church. Burial will take place in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Tynan was a veteran of the Confederacy. His war record, compiled from the files of Stonewall Camp, of which he was a member, is printed herewith: "C. B. Tynan entered the service of the Confederate States in the early part of 1861, at Columbia, Fluvanna County, Virginia, as a private in Captain George Hughes company and served in the Valley campaign and was later in charge of the company guarding the James River canal. He participated in many engagements with the enemy in their efforts to destroy the locks of the canal. He served to the end of the war and was paroled when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered." Stonewall Camp, Confederate Veterans, will be called out to attend his funeral. services, which will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at St. Paul's Catholic Church. The interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery.


DAVIS, Elsie McGuire, 97, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 7, 1999 at Friendship Manor. Born in Franklin County on April 27, 1901, she was a daughter of the late James Pascal and Juliana Plybon McGuire. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Guy O. Davis; a daughter, Alberta Liles; and a stepdaughter, Rosa Davis Robinson. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Harold Jennings, Roanoke; Lucille and Al Bunner, Johnstown, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law, Harris and Juanita McGuire, Wirtz, Va.; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton with Elder Leonard Brammer officiating. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel after 11 a.m. Tuesday, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
