Misc. Notes

Ole Tollef Gronseth:
June 27, 1941: This community was saddened by the death of Ole T. Gronseth, respected citizen and farmer. Mr. Gronseth died on Thursday morning after being in failing health for two years. A year ago in March he was taken to Rochester where he underwent an operation for a cancerous tumor. After he came home he was able to be around until the last three months when he was confined to his bed. During his illness he has been tenderly cared for by his wife and daughter, who have done everything possible to ease his suffering.

Mr. Gronseth was born March 8, 1885 in Akron township and was 57 years old at the time of his death. He has spent his entire life on the farm which was his father's before him. He spent his happy childhood there and helped his father with the farm work, and in turn his sons have helped him operate the same farm.

October 9, 1906, he married Miss Anna Carlsrud and to this union six children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Three daughters and two sons - Mrs. Inga Fuder at home; Mrs. Alfred Wigdahl (Olida) and Mrs. Harry Rorvig (Ella), both of Rothsay and Tony and Eddie on the home farm.

Mr. Gronseth was a public spirited citzen, always willing to help others. He held many offices of trust in the community and took an active part in community affairs. He served as township clerk for 24 years; as clerk of the school district for 22 years; held membership in the Lake Region REA, the Akron Shipping Association; the Rothsay Commercial Club; Wilkin County Farm Bureau, American Hereford Association and Minnesota Hereford Breeders Association; and served as director of the Farmers Co-operative Creamery, Oscar Mutual Insurance Company, as an AAA committeeman, Secretary of the Farmers Grain and Mercantile Company for 22 years and of the Farmers Co-operative Store for seven years.

Last year he and Mrs. Gronseth were elected master farmer and homemaker of Wilkin County. He was also a faithful member of the Hamar Lutheran Church.

Funeral services for Ole T. Gronseth will be held Tuesday, July 1, 1941, at 1 o'clock at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Hamar Church with Rev. Salveson officiating. Fergus Daily Journal

OLE T. GRONSETH DIED THIS A.M.

Spent Entire Life on Farm in Akron Township. Was Active in All Co-Operatives Chosen As Wilkin County Master Farmer in January, 1941.

As we go to press, we learn of the death of Ole T. Gronseth, which occured at about 10 o'clock, after a lingering of several months. The direct cause of his death was cancer of the stomach.

Mr. Gronseth had been in poor health for about a year, having submitted to an operation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester last summer, from which he never recovered, but gradually became weaker until he was forced to remain in bed most of the past three or four months. He was given the very best of care by his devoted wife and children, and he remained a patient sufferer during his entire sickness.

Ole T. Gronseth was born March 8, 1885 in Akron Township, and remained there his entire lifetime, having spent more than 50 years on the farm, which is one of the finest in Wilkin county. After his wedding to Miss Anna Carlsrud on October, 1906, they remained on the farm with his father, the late Tollef Gronseth, who died the following year, and since then has operated the farm up to 1939, when he moved onto the adjacent farm, which he purchased from the estate of his uncle, Ole O. Gronseth. His sons Eddie and Tony have been managing both farms since that time.

Mr. Gronseth was of a quiet and friendly disposition, but in spite of this fact, many honors were thrust upon him, as his judgement was sound in all matters. He served his township as clerk for 27 years, and his school district as clerk for 22 years. He was one of the pioneer advocates in cooperative field, having helped organize the five cooperatives now existing in Rothsay. He served as an official in most of them, being president of the Farmers Grain & Mercantile Co. and secretary of the Rothsay Cooperative Association (store) at the time of his death. He was forced to decline reelection in some of the others due to his failing health.

Mr. and Mrs. Gronseth were honored the first of the year, by being chosen as master farmer and home maker for Wilkin county for 1940.

Besides his widow, Mr. Gronseth is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Inga Fuder, Mrs. Alfred Wigdahl and Mrs. Harry Rorvig, all of this village, and two sons, Eddie and Tony, both on the home farm. An only sister died in California several years ago.

Funeral services will be held from the home at one o'clock and from Hamar Church at two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, July 1st, 1941, Rev. Salveson will officiate. Rothsay Enterprise.
