| Ole was born on Kittelsrud at Kjorveneie. He moved to Gran Parish in 1859? where he lived at the Karlsrud farm on Jevnaker Prestegard and worked as a helper. Ole lived on lower Fallangseiet when he was confirmed on May 6, 1860/1861. Ellen & Ole emigrated to the US around 1880. Their two children, Johan, 2, and Thora, age six months, came with them. Their first residence was Decorah, Iowa. They also lived in Rothsay, MN. Ole Carlsrud after their divorce also resided at Esmond, North Dakota and Girard, ND. Jan 25, 1899. Ole Johansen Carlsrud and Ellen Sorine Rasmussen lived in a dirt dugout 10 x 14 ft on land east of the present Skaug farm which is 2 miles west of Rothsay. They spent two years in Decorah, Iowa before coming to Rothsay. Ole was a railroad surveyor when the road was built through the Rothsay area. Their son Reinhart was born in 1880 in Iowa. John and Thora were born in Norway. The other children were born near Rothsay, MN. Ole went to Esmond, ND three miles west in Pierce County in 1897 and returned to Rothsay about 1930, a sick man. He stayed with the Gronseth's, Sabbe's, Hilmer, and Fred before he died. Olida said he stayed with John and Thora also. Ole Johansen Carlsrud was born June 13, 1845 in Kjorveneie, Norge to John Hansen Heyer, born in Hadeland area, Norway and Marte Olsd. Ole Johansen Carlsrud married Ellen Sorine Rasmussen in Norway. Ole Carlsrud was a surveyor for the railroad as it was developed in the Rothsay area of MN. Ole Carlsrud left his family and moved to North Dakota where he lived until shortly before he died when he returned to Rothsay, Mn. Ole was described as an alcoholic while he was living in Rothsay with his family. Apparently he had been successful in Norway and successful while in North Dakota where he was well liked by his neighbors. Ole Carlsrud Mr. Carlsrud came to Rosedale Township in 1901 or 1902 and filed on a homestead in Sections 20 and 29. Most of this 160 acres was hay land. He planted a grove of trees and built a small two room house. He rented out the field and also the hay land and worked at odd jobs around. This area was just being settled so everyone needed wells which were dug by hand with one man doing the digging and another man at the top to pull the buckets of dirt up. He must have had some experience in surveying because he had the job of "road boss". None of the section lines were mapped out or roads built so as the county settled up the need for roads was evident. He also did some carpentry work. When his sons were here they built some houses including the one in which we still live. After the school house was built in 1903, we had Church services there. I can remember him singing. He had a good clear singing voice. He had one horse and a buggy for transportation. My mother baked bread for him but when he was working for a neighbor he got his meals there. After some years here he moved in to Esmond -- 10 miles east -- Here he rented a small house and continued doing odd jobs and repair work. I was not around here for a few years but I understand he went back to Minnesota before he passed away. I hope this will give you a little insight into your grandfather. I have met most of the Oscar Sabbe children at one time or another. Our land joined his -- our houses were about 1/4 mile apart. F.O.
