A great shock that saddened the entire community came on Tuesday, July 9 with the announcement of the death of Mrs. Earl De France at the home of her mother, Mrs. Minnie E. Murty. On July 7, a baby boy was born to her, and for a while seemed to improve, but later became worse, and after two days of intense suffering she passed away. Her husband is in France with the American Expeditionary Forces. The death is unusually sad as her husband is serving in the army and is en route to France. He is a son of S. D. De France of this place.
Margaret Myrtle (Myrle) Murty was born June 21, 1901 two miles north of Butlerville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Murty. Her young life was spent in this vicinity. Myrtle (Myrle) was a great favorite among her associates, her cheerful and loving disposition winning many friends for her.
On August 30, 1917 she was married to Francis Earl De France and after only three weeks of happy married life he was called to the colors, and she returned to the home of her mother.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the Montour Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Charles Richardson of State Center Thursday p.m. at two. A quartet composed of Mrs. Guy Palmer, Miss Lottie Wallace, E. G. Cronk and Omar Milliard sang "Someone Will Understand," "The Lord Knows Why" and "We'll Never Say Good Bye in Heaven." The church would not hold all those who came to papy their last respect. There were many beautiful flowers. Pall bearers Clifford Irons, Pete Kouloa, Harry White, Emil Kalina and Luren and Roy Fisher. Flower girls were Mrs. Edna Butler, Mary, Nellie, and Rosa Miles. Burial was in Maple Hill.
She leaves her infant son born Sunday morning, her husband serving his country in France, her mother, Minnie E. Murty, one sister, Flossie Murty, besides other relatives and a host of friends. At the age of 15 she was baptised and joined the Church of Latter Day Saints of which whe was a faithful member until death. (it was actually the Reformed Church of the Latter Day Saints)
