DIARY OF OUR TRIP TO OSTERSUND AND ALSEN
MAY 9, 10, 11, 1978
Tuesday, May 9: On the train to Ostersund by 7:30--visited with a
very nice lady from Vanstal who spoke very good English. We were
met in Ostersund by Anna Ferber; her sister Birgit Thalin;
Birgit's son Lars (pronounced Larsh) and his girlfriend Margreta.
Margreta could speak English quite well, and Lars could speak
some English. Anna grinned and grinned. We took a cab to the
Hotel Ostersund, and they left for Anna;s apartment. We freshened
up and at 5:30p.m. Hakan Andersson came to the hotel for us; and
he, his wife Greta and her sister Karin Alenius drove us to
Anna's for supper. Hakan spoke English very well, and such a nice
and friendly man. Anna had 14 people invited to dinner and what a
feast!!! We ate from 6-9:00 p.m.--about five courses! First we
had Swedish flat bread (2 kinds), rye krisp, pickled herring,
several kinds of cheese including goat's milk cheese, jellies,
sliced meat and lite beer. Then she served meat balls, omelet
with cheese, and parslied potatoes. The next course was baked
salmon with dill sauce; another fish dish, and several vegetables
(served with white wine). Next, she brought in glasses of sherry
and a fruit dessert with whipped cream---and last but not least
Kaffee and pastries! We were both so stuffed it was unreal, and
we thought we might be sick! Anna had gifts for everyone--for us
a small jewely case, Swedish flags, large picture of the Froson
Church, postcards of their King and Queen, etc.. The only one who
could speak English was Hakan, but later Ingmar Ostberg
arrived--a school teacher who spoke English beautifully and there
was much talk of the Alenius family history. A very fascinating
and very nice evening. Ingmar took us back to our hotel.
Wednesday, May 10: What a place--the sun rose at 1:00 a.m. and by
2 o'clock it was daylight! Neither of us could figure out how to
close the blinds so we didn't sleep very well. We have discovered
some strange things about Sweden as we traveled--blinds are all
between the storm window and window--there are door handles (no
knobs)--they never heard of washcloths--their toilet tissue is
kinda like sandpaper--and toilets flush from pulling up on a
small knob on top of the tank lid. Also lights are very dim and
mirrors are very small--BUT, their towels are huge and fluffy
(like beach towels). Also, you eat cheese, marmalade (orange),
bread, and corn flakes every morning for breakfast. We thought we
might have to rent a car in Ostersund, but Hakan and Greta
Andersson very graciously offered to take us around--and they
were delightful and wonderful. It was a beautiful day and we
began by driving to the Alsen Church and cemetery. The Church was
very old--had been rebuilt three times as the second time it was
destroyed by fire. They told us the bell and a big clock on the
tower had been donated by some of the Alenius family. We found
the tombstones of many Alenius's, and it was so interesting.
Later we drove to a government housing project for pensioners and
visited a delightful little lady who turned out to be the foster
daughter of JACOB and SARA ALENIUS. Her name was BRETTA JOHANSSON
and her mother, who was Jacob Alenius's housekeeper, died in
childbirth. She had much of Jacob Alenius''s furniture--a
beautiful grandfather clock dated 1730, gorgeous antique divan
with six chairs (all carved wood and velvet cushions) in perfect
condition, a sideboard. She was 86 years old and so perky and
spry. She went back to the cemetery with us, and also to the
Alenius Museum. What a delightful person! She gave us each a
wooden candle holder when we left. Then we drove to Jarpen to a
nursing home to visit ANNA THALIN, first cousin of Grandma
Nichols. She is 93 years old--bright blue eyes, really sharp in
her memory and so sweet. She was so excited and thrilled with our
visit--had on a new lavender dress. The nursing home was
fantastic--beautifully equipped and so clean and modern. We had a
real party--especially prepared in honor of our visit--white
linen tablecloth, silver coffee service, bone china and three
bouquets of fresh flowers. We had kaffee, four kinds of cookies
and a fancy torte (creme filling, whipped cream, fruit and shaved
chocolate on top). Every meal in Sweden seems to end with torte
and coffee served in tiny demitasse cups. Anna''s son AKE drove
80 miles to be with us. He was very nice--a policeman. Again,
Hakan was the only one who could speak English and we would have
been lost without him to translate for us. After we left the
nursing home, Hakan, Greta, Alyce and I had a picnic lunch in a
beautiful pine forest. It was chilly but Hakan wrapped us each in
a big wool blanket and it was delightful with snow covered
mauntains in the distance. We had flat brod, dried Reindeer meat,
hard boiled eggs, apples and hot tea--and it tasted delicious.
Sweden is so beautiful--lakes, pine trees, and distant mountains
all the way on our drive. Hakan and Greta invited us to dinner at
their lovely home. Hakan gave us the tour (three stories) while
Greta and Karin put dinner on the table. We had chicken,
potatoes, fruit salad, flat brod, apple sauce and a wonderful
pastry Karin had made--a rolled crisp pastry curst with fruit and
whipped cream inside--and of course, our kaffee in small cups
last of all. Everyone seems to set such a beautiful table--fresh
flowers, candles and lovely linens. We loved it! Later in the
evening Hakan took Karin home first and we toured her apartment,
then he returned us to our hotel. What wonderful people--and we
knew we'd never have found our way around without their help and
there would have been the additional problem of the language
barrier without Hakan. We ended the day so tired--we walked
miles, but it was a good day. We went to bed at 10:30 and slept
like babies.
Thursday, May 11: ANNA FERBER was to come by the hotel at noon so
we could take her to lunch--but of course, she came knocking at
our door at 10 a.m.--smiling and bobbing and loaded with gifts,
as always. She;s like a fat, jolly little elf--rattled on and on
to us in Swedish and we never understood a word she said. We
nearly fainted when she arrived so early. Alyce gave up
completely--Shirley with her small dictionary tried to
communicate--Alyce turns her back and laughs! we browsed through
the stores, ate lunch, was interviewed and had our pictures taken
at the local newspaper (although we couldn't figure out what she
was up to as she lead us a merry chase). We ordered beef for
lunch and later found out it was reindeer meat! Shirley bought
some lovely crystal. Anna bought fresh flowers to take to Anna
Ostberg in Froson, where we went for kaffee and pastries later.
While we were shopping we ran into Birgit Thalin cutting around
Ostersund on a beat up old bicycle--red stocking cap, red
sweater, slacks and boots--right in the thick of all the traffic!
What a surprise, but Birgit was full of surprises! We returned to
our hotel and at 3 p.m. Ingmar Ostberg picked us up and took us
to the Island of Froson, where he and his mother live and also
where he teaches school. He took us sightseeing and we especially
loved the old church at Froson built in the year 1200. It had a
very unusual bell tower, and the interior was lovely. It is still
used, and Ingmar sings in the church choir. We went to his family
home for kaffee--his mother is such a dear person--Anna. Again we
had the beautiful linen tablecloth, candlelight, fresh flowers
and the most delicious cookies and pastries (also ice cream),
with our demitasse. Those Swedes really know how to throw a
Kaffee Klotch!! Meantime the calories are mounting up, but we
pass nothing by. We had another shock at Ostberg's house, because
once again we encountered Birgit. She had ridden all that way
across a bridge and up a huge hill on her bike from
Ostersund--and she's over 60 years old. She just tickled us to
death. Ingmar took us back to our hotel at 6:30 p.m. as he had to
go to choir practice. ANNA FERBER rode along and we assumed she
was going on home--but, behold, she got out at our hotel and
followed us up to our room. We were so tired and much to
do--packing, baths, hand washing, etc., as this was our last day
in Ostersund and we had to get up very early to catch a train at
6:10 a.m. Alyce busied herself with more card writing--Shirley
brewed a cup of tea and served Anna tea and breakfast bars--and
Anna grinned and kept talking in Swedish--and Alyce kept ignoring
the two of them, but was having a good time laughing with her
back turned! Not too helpful. Finally, we bid her goodbye and
hoped we had convinced her not to arrive at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow to
see us off at the depot. Ostersund was fun! Tomorrow we head
south for Alingsas.
