Anna Christina Nelson, came to the United States from Jamtland Sweden, at the age of two years old, locating in Geddes, Charles Mix County, South Dakota USA, where she was babtized and became a member of the Lutheran Church. She married Erik Hanson Setpember 14, 1899, and came to Gregory County, South Dakota, as one of the early homesteaders. Erik and Christina had eight children, two of whom died at infancy.

In 1944 Christina and Erik retired and moved to Gregory, South Dakota USA, Erik passed away the following year from heart failure. Christina moved to Omaha, where she lived with her daughter Agnes for six years. She had been semi-invalid for seventeen months with a broken hip. Per (Peter) Victor Alenius Nelson came to America from Sweden with his Uncle Rev. George Norbeck, who was a brother of his deceased Mother. He changed his name to Nelson.

For ten years, from 1926-1936, I...my sister Helen and brothers Perry and Henry lived at Bethesda Children's Home at Beresford, South Dakota. Living apart from my parents' relatives, certainly throughout time made us almost strangers. So I hope the following will help to explain how my brothers, sister and I fit into the family history.

I remember my Mother's immediate family, those who were still living after I was born, as we lived close by. I remember my Uncles bringing Christmas gifts to our house on Christmas Day. There were eleven children in the family but I only remember my Mother being the only daughter. There were four sons when we went to Bethesda, but soon there were only two left. I didn't get to know my Uncle Jens very well. I believe he was more reserved and kept to himself more. One Uncle I knew well, Uncle Severt must have been my Mother's favorite brother. He was the one who took us to Bethesda. He was the who took my Mother to the hospital at Custer, South Dakota. And he was the only relative (that I remember) who came to visit us at Bethesda. There were probably reasons that others didn't come. Beresford was quite far for the mode of transportation of that time. Our dear Grandmother Helene wrote often only in Norwegian, but there were many at "The Home" who could translate. She suffered from Rheumatism and it was painful for her to move about. She must have had a lot of time to meditate over the loss of so many of her family, including her husband. I had an Aunt Minnie, who was a half-sister of my Mother. I met her when I left Bethesda.

While at Bethesda, I got acquainted with a relative who we all have met now and know well. Helen Yttreness Johnson has devoted so much time to organizing and pushing for plans for all of our reunions. There were others who hilped, but at this time I can't say names. But I'm so appreciative for all that has been done to bring us together. Helen's family lived near Beresford, South Dakota and her mother and Helen came for me several tiems to visit. My sister Helen also visited them. 

Prior to 1926, my parents, sister and brothers and I lived on a farm N.W. of Lake Andes, South Dakota. My memories of much of that time, aren't ver clear, however htere are a few incidents that are unforgettable. I remember my sister and brothers leaving for school in the morning. I watched them walk through the meadow until they were out of sight. Then when it was time for them to return in the afternoon, I took my place by an upstairs window and waited for them. My Mother had contacted Tuberculosis (as had several of her family). I knew whe was very sick because she spent so much time in bed with the door closed. Her coughing was so persistent and intense. My Dad wasn't around much. He was a farmer, but I didn't see him very often, so I really don't know where he kept himself. I do know he was drinking. He came home from town drunk on several occasions. I can only guess that he was trying to bury his grief and worries over the plight of his family. He knew my Mother would not get well, and I'm sure he knew his children would be taken from him. And my Mother had already made plans for us to go to Bethesda when she could no longer care for us. She remained in the hospital in Custer for one year before she passed away July 18, 1927.

Shirley Arlene NELSON I first became interested in the Alenius history when I traveled to Sweden in 1978 with my Aunt, Alyce Nichols. She talked incessantly all the way about various Alenius family--and all of the names were meaningless at that time. Aunt Alyce never got to utilize any of the information she had gathered in her researching family history, for shortly after we returned to the U.S., she lost her life in a car accident. All of the things she had collected and worked on were boxed and sent to me--hoping I would "do something" with them. I was interested, but not inspired until I realized we would be able to attend the Nelson Reunion in July 1988. I began in January to seriously concentrate on trying to put all the puzzle pieces together. It was confusing, time consuming, and contagious. After many hours of arranging, rearranging, changing conflicting dates, etc., I put together this booklet and a few pages of genealogy. Now each member of the Alenius family seens very real to me. I wish by some magic I could turn back the years for a short while so I could get to know them better. I would love to drop by the home of Jacob and Sara Alenius and sit around their lovely dining room table with its silver service and china, and sip coffee with them--with their ceiling high-high grandfather clock ticking away and their flowering plants lining the window sills. Looking at the kindly faces of Gottfrid and Maria Alenius. I Just know I would love them. They were devout Christians and well know for their kind deeds in their community. Though they had no children, they always gave gifts of money to all the newborn in Morsil where they lived. Or--it would have been fun to drop in at the home of Johan Oscar Alenius (another of P.K.'s sons) with his lively brood of six children. It is reported he was a wealthy farmer and merchant--loved to entertain guests in his home--and he was a brilliant conversationalist. 

Had I been as familiar with all of the Alenius background as I am now, I would have asked many, many more questions, taken more photos and poked around more in the places where they lived. Now, I want to go back!!! I regret most of all that Aunt Alyce cant't see the results of all of here efforts--and that she isn't here to attend the Nelson reunion. She would have loved it. But...I dedicate this book on the family history to her memory, thankful that she spirited my interest and that she took me back to the Country of our ancestors.
