Anna May Murty was born June 15, 1896 on the present home farm about four miles north of Montour in Indian Village Twp. Her entire life was spent at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Murty until in April 1914 she was wooed and won by Ray Hempy, a very worthy young man of this vicinity. To this union was born a baby daughter about seven months old now. She has been taken care of by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Hempy, since her mother became ill, which was shortly after the baby's birth. Tuberculosis of the lungs developed and while everything possiblewas done to eradicate the disease, and the deceased put up a very brave fight, the end came Friday, January 21 at about 6 p.m. at the home of her mother being 19 years, 7 months and 6 days old. She leaves her husband and her baby daughter, her mother, six brothers, Earl, Sherman, Clinton, Willie, Ross and Joseph, two sisters, Flossie and Myrle.
Mrs. Hempy was a faithful member of the church of the Latter Day Saints. In all the months of her sickness she never complained of the burden she had to bear and was patient and courageous through it all. Her heart was fearless and no one ever heard a sigh of faltering as the end drew near.
Of those who lived in the innermost circle of her life, she leaves her husband, her baby daughter, her mother, six brothers, and two sisters.
The Methodist Church here was filled to capacity when the many friends and relatives gathered Sunday p.m. at 1 o'clock to express their sorrow and sympathy for the living ones who grieve and their last respects to the dead. Rev. Bunce preached a short sermon and music was furned by a mixed quartet consisting of Mrs. C.J. Holdran, Miss Evt Lovejoy, O.L. Millard and N.P. Cronk. The remains were laid to rest in Maple Hill Cemetery beside her brother and father who preceded her in death. The pall bearers were young men acquaintances of both the deceased and her husband living in the same neighborhood being: Charles F. Smith, Will G. Smith, Lurin (or Laurren) Fisher, Ray Fisher, Alfred Dixon and Leonard Mathern.

James S. Murty was born in Tama County, Iowa, Nov. 29, 1857, and died Dec. 24, 1914, at his home, about 3 miles north of Montour, at the age of 57 years and 25 days.
His death was caused by rheumatism which affected his heart. On Nov. 29, 1882, he was united in marriage with Minnie E. Coleman, to which union were born 12 children, of whom nine survive him: Wallace E., Sherman H., Clinton, Anna May Hempy, William C., Margaret M., Ross A., Flossie E., Joseph N., all of Montour, Iowa. Two sons died in infancy and one about two year ago. He is also survived by four sisters, four half-sisters, and one half-brother.
With the exception of one year spent in Nebraska, Mr. Murty has lived in this vicinity all of his life.
His occupation was largely that of a thresherman and he tried to be fair and honorable in all his dealings. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and well liked by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Montour, Saturday, Dec. 26, at 1 p.m. Rev. E.E. Bunce, pastor, preaching the funeral sermon. The remains were then laid to rest in Maple Hill cemetery.

James Murty's mother died when he was about 2 years old. Of course there were older children and all girls as he was the only boy in the family and the yougest. So it is assumed that the younger ones were taken care of by their father and sisters. William, his Dad, married Minerva Malcom in 1864. James married Minnie Coleman, he loved to hunt and fish. So maybe that is where my Dad learned to hunt and fish. When James died he had several Coon Hounds, which he kept in the hay mow. Grandma baked corn bread every morning to soak in milk for them. I remember the big red Blood Hound he had. He came to our place and played with us kids. He was beautiful and so friendly.
My mother tells that Grandpa Murty always raised a lot of fruit. He took strawberries to Marshalltown to sell at the stores. They also had a big orchard south of the house and I would eat green apples. Grandma always told me they would make me sick. I can not remember of being sick from eating them. Parents: William MURTY and Ann POTTER .
