bullet Patricia Marie MUCHA was born on OCT 5 1952 in Omaha, Nebraska USA. It was a cool night on October 5th 1952, all was quiet except for the clock upon the wall. My Dad was out playing in the Band (J.K.'s Orchestra), he was and still is a very good drummer. The rest of the family was fast asleep, except for my Mother, she was half crying. You see, she was in labor with me, her fifth and last child.

Her moans and cries woke all of my other Brothers and Sisters up from their sleep, and they all ran into my Mother's bedroom to see what was the matter with her. She told them she had to go to the Hospital. My older Sister Marilyn was so excited, but the rest of them were scared because they never saw my Mother cry so much. But...being the Mother that she was, she told them that it was all right, and told my oldest Brother Bob to try to call my dad. He tried and tried but he had failed. Finally she could wait no longer, she had to call the local Cab Company, and since Bob was the oldest, he had to stay with Marilyn, Joanne and Wayne.

She finally got to the hospital just in time because I was on my way and I wanted to get out of this dark and quiet womb. They rushed Mom right away to the delivery room not knowing what they were going to find. The Doctor was there and he told here to relax, and it will be over in a few minutes, but...those few minutes seemed like hours to her. You see, I was a breech baby. The doctor did not know how much more pain my Mother could stand. All I know is I wanted to see the world. Exausted and in pain, Mom passed out, the Doctor said it was better this way but, he was also worried because he almost lost the both of us. Finally after almost one hour, I was born, this scrawney, wrinkled little baby, who was crying her eyes out in relief.

We lived in this little three room house on 13th Street. It was very small for seven people, we didn't have much money, the house was a typical farm in the City, because we had Chickens, Pigs and Ducks. Mom used to go out every morning and gather eggs for our breakfast. Then at least once a week she would go out and wring a Chickens neck, or Dad would put it's head on a chopping block, and we would watch the Chicken run around the yard, without a head. It was gross!

I think the thing I hated most was plucking the feathers off of these dead Chickens. Everytime I would go pluck a feather off, blood would gush out of it's neck. To this day I will not go into a Poultry House.

When I was about two years old, I decided to go for a swim, I saw everybody else swimming and I thought that looks like fun. So I started walking around our little home made pool, that was about three feet deep and made out of concrete blocks, and I jumped in. The next thing I knew, I was in the water over my head and gasping for air, if it wasn't for the fearless courage of my Sister Marilyn, I would have drowned, because no one else was watching me.

I had a very special playmate, he was the best friend I ever had. His name was "Rusty". See Rusty run, (ha! ha!). Rusty was our dog, he was very protective of us kids, and if any stranger came around he would get mad and bark his fool head off. I felt so sorry for him, because we would tease him so much, while he was chained to his dog house. I can remember once when I was very small, no more that three years old, and I was playing in our back yard, and Mom was on the front porch doing some laundry by hand, because we didn't have a Washer and any running Water. Being as young as I was and not having any sense, I was going to play with the Garden Hose, all of a sudden Rusty broke loose from his chain and he was acting like a wild Dog, Mom looked up and she thought Rusty had gone crazy, but the only reason he did that was because, that Garden Hose was a six foot long black Snake. So Rusty grabbed me by my diaper and threw me across the yard. Luckily I wasn't hurt, and Rusty was the hero of the day. Rusty killed the snake, by biting the thing almost in two. I still don't know what kind of snake it was.

I was four years old when we moved into our new house, and it seemed like a mansion compared to the little house we lived in on thirteenth Street. Our new house still wasn't large enough to accomodate our big family. It had two bedrooms, but that was still one more bedroom than we had in our other house. Four of us kids slept in one bedroom, sleeping the older ones in a double bed, Bobby slept on a roll-away bed in the living room, and of course lucky me, I slept as usual in my baby bed. I know it was to be a six year crib, but sleeping in it until I was seven years old was a bit ridiculous!! I thought my lucky day had come of breaking out of those bars, when my Dad fell on my crib, but all he did was break the rail, and that was a real blow to my ego at that time of my life. I just wonder how long the other kids had to sleep in that baby bed?

We did get some help from the Veteran's Administration, and the Salvation Army. They used to give us food, which consisted of canned ham (it tasted like Spam!), powdered eggs, canned vegetables, powdered milk, and powdered every thing else, I think all this was surplus food left over from World War 2. To this day, I cannot stand the thought of eating that stuff! If you have ever eaten powdered eggs, you will know what I'm talking about, and the milk was just like drinking white water. I told myself when I have children I would never feed them powdered milk.

One time dad was in the hospital for nine months, because of a fungus in his lungs, and we were starving, we couldn't get any help from the Welfare Dept., and mom had five of us kids to feed, we ate bread and gravy a lot, because that's all we had in the house to eat. Once and awhile Bobby would steal us a candy bar. Dad finally came home, and he was well until the next time.

When Dad was in World War 2 he had to crawl around in the swamps, and from that he got malaria. We used to have to sit up with him all night, with ice water and wash cloths, applied to his forehead, but being as young as I was, I didn't have to do that. I would sit there and watch everyone else, and cry because I didn't know whether he was going to die or not. Dad would be laying in bed burning up with fever, and out of his mind with delirium, he would constantly talk about the war, and then he would start swinging his arms like he was trying to fight off the enemy. Usually by morning his fever would break and he would snap out of it.

Being the baby of the family, I was spoiled by him. I can remember one time when he bought me a three wheeled bike, it looked like a tricycle but you could stand up and ride on it, I never saw anything like it in my life. Then dad used to always bring me cookies (usually a whole pack), it made the other kids very mad, but I didn't care because I was spoiled, and being the little brat that I was, I didn't share with the other kids, but that quickly changed when they started ganging up on me.

Marilyn was kind of mean to me once and awhile, for some reason I still don't understand, she got mad at me and pored salt down my pants, it burned for a whole week. Then another time she got mad at me and pretended to call the Reform School, and I believed her, so I ran in my room and watched out of the window, then all of a sudden a car pulled up and a man got out and I started screaming bloody murder, because I didn't want to go with them, she told me they made you eat bugs, worms and spiders, and they locked you up in a little bitty room, but he turned out to be a friend of dads'. None of the other kids were ever that mean to me, Wayne and I used to fight a lot, but...then we played a lot too.

They used to always take me swimming at Morton Park, one of them used to always carry me because I couldn't walk that far, it was a good two or three miles, so they would all take turns, because I wanted to go with them. I can remember one time when me and Marilyn went swimming and we spent most of the day there, but it was getting late and we had to get home, so we gathered up our things, and we started home, I had to go to the bathroom, I had one problem though, I couldn't get down my bathing suit, so I crapped in them, that's how bad I had to go. It seemed twice as far going back home, especially when you have a million Gnats flying around your butt, it didn't look or smell too good. When I got home I had Gnats crawling around in my pants, and on my legs, mom got mad at Marilyn for not letting me go to the bathroom, and I had to clean up my crappy pants. After that I laid down to sleep, because I was tired from that long walk.

We had a large weeping willow tree in our front yard it had a certain beauty about it, but...it could also be very dangerous, because when ever we were bad, dad would make us go out and cut a branch off of it, and he would whip us with it. I remember this happened quite a few times. Have you ever felt the sting of a skinney little branch?....especially when it misses your butt and hits your legs, boy does that hurt. When one person did something wrong we all get a whipping, and I usually started it, being so spoiled and rotten to the core as I was in those days.

It was getting cooler outside, it must have been the change in the season, I was five years old at the time, and a typical five year old always comes down with a cold during the change in the seasons. After a week of coughing, fever and being in bed I had to tell my parents that I didn't feel good at all, so they put me in the car and took me to the hospital. My back hurt, I had a fever and chills, and I was wishing I would get over this, The doctors at the hospital examined me and they said I had pneumonia, so I was admitted to the hospital, where I spent four days in a baby bed, was there no end to those beds. It was bigger than my bed the tails were higher, the only reason they were that high is because they were supposed to be escape proof, but...I fooled them, I escaped because this was another instance where I had to go to the bathroom, I kept yelling for the nurse, but no one heard me, so I crapped my pants before I escaped. I told myself I can't stand this crap in my pants, so I had to do the next logical thing, and that was to escape out of these bars, so I climbed the walls, and made my way safely to the bathroom where I had to dump the crap out of my pants and wash them again. While I was out of my bed and I had my freedom, I thought I would explore the corridors of the hospital, I had to dodge the nurses, everytime I heard one coming, I would have to duck into a doorway. Here was this little five year old running loose down the hallways, with no underwear on, and a gown that was open in the back, but I was too busy having too much fun to think of that. Then it happened, I got caught, so they took me back to my baby bed, and they told me to stay in there, but I was trying to explain to them that I had yelled for them several times, because I had to go to the bathroom. The next thing I knew it was morning, and things looked a little different around me. It was all cloudy, then I realized they had stuck me in a plastic bag, it was so cold and damp, they told me this tent was to help me breathe better, because after my little excursion, I had a very rough night. As time went on I started feeling much better, and I was allowed to go see a movie with the rest of the kids, so the nurses gathered all of us up, and she took us into a little dark room, where we were treated to a western movie. It was a boring movie, but it was funny when they ran it backwards. I wanted to go back to my room and visit with my roommate, but she couldn't talk, she was just a baby, with a cleft palate. The doctors finally told my parents that I could go home, they picked me up and I was on my way home....boy was I glad!

Wayne and I used to get in a lot of trouble, mom would tell us to get back at a certain time, but we never did, we always used to go on those little excursions, it was either the old orchard grove, or the ditch at the bottom of our hill. Of all the places I think the ditch was my very favorite place. Wayne and I used to do a lot of imagining, for example we were Tarzan and Jane, or we were escaped convicts running through the forest, the only thing I didn't like about it was all of the Mosquitos, we would always come out of there with a million bites, but I didn't care, it was our little hideaway.

We used to like to visit the old man that lived by there, he was about seventy years old, he and his wife were always nice to us. They used to give us ice cream, and a few times they invited us to lunch, it made me laugh everytime we ate over their house, because when this old man would eat, his teeth would clack, especially when he ate hot dogs, but they were just like grandparents to us. Once and awhile we would sneak off and go to the store, boy if mom knew we went across that busy street, she would have skinned us alive, we used to go in there and steal candy, at least Wayne would, and I would be the lookout. The last time we did it we almost got caught, so as soon as we walked out of the store, we had to ditch the candy in the gutter, and for all I know the candy might still be there today.

Every now and then we would go across the street to the crabapple orchard and pick crabapples when they were in season. There were about twenty trees, and Wayne and I would love to climb them, once and awhile when we were brave enough, we would sneak in the man's house, who owned the orchard, he had a dowagers hump on his back, which kind of looked scary to two little kids. One day he caught us, he chased Wayne and I hid behind something, and as he was chasing Wayne I ran out of the front door, we never did that again!

Another favorite place of ours was Thills store, I loved to go in there and just look at all of the stuff she had, it didn't look like a regular store, it was in their house. I would go in there everyday and buy candy, it was a stick of candy that had a lot of different flavors.
