Ivy Rule
Steve tries to get a Hummer

The Story

Around the time of our engagement Rachel was in love with the Hummer (photos), the very rugged military inspired off-road vehicle by A.M. General. So I (Steve) thought it would be great if I could incorporate a Hummer into the proposal (perhaps ask her in it, or at least use it for transportation). Since they cost $60,000 and up (way up) buying was out of the question. I started by calling every single dealership in the Northeast U.S. to see if anybody would rent me one, the only dealership who said they would was James Hummer Outlet (in Flemmington, NJ) and they wanted $2500.00 for one day!. I figured I'd try a different route, I wrote a detailed letter to A.M. General's C.E.O. explaining the situation (secretly hoping they would lend me a Hummer for the day as a publicity stunt for them). I didn't hear back so I called the C.E.O.'s secretary, I received a return call from the National Marketing Manager (if memory serves), who thought what I was doing was great, he hooked me up with the Sales Manager for the Eastern U.S. It was the sales manager who convinced a local dealership to rent me one for $500.00 for a day, which was still more than I could really afford. So I got on a Hummer (e)mailing list and asked if anyone would lend/rent me their Hummer for a day. Three people were actually willing, but then two ended up going on vacation and the other ended up in the paint shop getting re-painted. So ended my idea of having a Hummer as part of the engagement, the only car involved in the engagement was Rachel's Nissan Sentra (and that was strictly in a transportation sense). As it were the engagement went off beautifully without the Hummer (read about it).

Recently I got the opportunity to sit in a Hummer for the first time (courtesy of RCN at Fall Internet World at the Javits Center), see the photos (1 | 2).
