Rachel and Steve had a date to go see the Godfather's Maschugana Wedding
(similar to Tony -N- Tina's), on Saturday August 17th 1996 at 7:30 P.M. when it was
playing at the Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester,
NY. Steve told Rachel he was going to various computer and other stores for the day,
in fact he spent the day working on all the last minute preparations of making it
a perfect evening. He came back from the "stores" at around 6:15pm (he was running very late). Rachel kept telling Steve to calm down, as he was very nervous and jittery. They got to the show on time (slightly early in fact) and were seated at a table with a great view of the upcoming show/wedding. Steve continued to be nervous.
Rachel and Steve danced several songs together (VERY romantic). After the entree was served, Steve suddenly complained the food was too spicy (Steve loves spicy food) and he needed to go to
the bathroom immediately (Rachel said he looked terrible), he was gone for about 10 min. He came back looking even worse, he slowly ate his meal (anyone who knows Steve would have known something was up as Steve never eats slowly). Rachel kept telling Steve to take off his jacket so he would feel better, but he kept refusing saying he looked terrible without it. During dessert the "groom of the wedding" got up to make announcements such as birthdays and anniversaries,
at the end the groom said there was one special announcement to make. He invited Steve to come to the middle of the dance floor (Steve was surrounded by about 250 strangers). The "groom" gave Steve the microphone, Steve turned towards Rachel and said "Rachel, my sweetheart, my companion, my lover, my best friend (he began to walk towards her) I love you with all my heart and soul, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?" (at this point he was down on one knee with  in his hand)(there was a stone in it).
Rachel and Steve were crying and hugging, Rachel gave her answer which he did not hear. The "groom" asked Rachel to give her answer on the microphone,
she said . They were the bell of the ball the rest of the evening, they were congratulated by many people in attendance, everybody loved the ring (thank g_d it wasn't small or CZ). They went back to their apartment afterwards to change clothing.
Steve surprised Rachel by driving to the Pearl River Hilton in Pearl River, New York (after stopping to tell a close friend and Steve's mother). Steve let Rachel go into the hotel room first, in front of her she saw a laptop computer with a screensaver that said "Steve and Rachel are engaged. World stunned". Steve turned on the lights and Rachel saw what Steve was really doing most of the day, decorating the room.
On each night table there was a vase filled with a dozen roses (mixed peach, yellow, and white, the wedding flower colors). There were decorations on each of the vases, one had two mini champagne flutes, the other a mini whisk and mini rolling pin. Each of the vases had six rubber balloons and one mylar (one said I LOVE YOU, the other said CONGRATULATION ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT). Around the room there were 15 cards. On top of the TV was a Mickey & Minnie bridal couple (Photo), as well as Taz and Toc (his girlfriend/wife) salt and pepper shakers. On the bed was a box of Jelly Belly jelly beans, and an Israeli Music CD. There was also a bottle of Asti Spumanti and two crystal champagne flutes engraved with their names, Steve's had the date of the engagement, Rachel's had a space left blank for the wedding date.
They toasted to the their future together. Rachel inquired about clothing for Sunday, Steve told her he had brought a change of clothing for her as well as her fuzzy monster slippers. Why after all would she have brought clothing this isn't Gilligan's Island after all (theme // trivia).
In the morning they had a breakfast buffet at the Hilton. They spent the rest of Sunday telling friends and family. Everyone they told was thrilled (after all Steve is a great guy).
