Packers News From March

Joyner,Thomason Resign

3/15/98 The Green Bay Packers have reached contracts with LB Seth Joyner and TE Jeff Thomason. Joyner agreed to a restructured contact today, that had him take a paycut of 750,000. If Joyner stays for the remainder of his contract he will make the same amount as he would have made, just through more bonuses. Thomason's contract was worth 1.8 million over 3 years. The only other team expressing interest in Thomason was Tampa Bay, but he wanted to stay in Green Bay.

Nitschke Dead at 61

3/8/98 Ray Nitschke, the starting MLB for the Packers in the 1960's and 70's died Sunday while driving with his daughter and granddaughter. He was prounouced dead at Venice Hospital in Naples, Fla. Nitschke is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 1978. A practice field next to the Don Hutson Center, was named Ray Nitschke field in honor of the great linebacker.

Aaron Taylor goes to Chargers

3/6/98 Free Agent Offensive lineman Aaron Taylor has signed a 4 year, 11 million dollar deal with the San Diego Chargers. Taylor, who has had surgery on both of his knees won the Lombardi award as the best lineman in College Football in 1994 with Notre Dame. Taylor was brought in to the Chargers organization to bring a winning attitude to a sub-par team. Taylor started in the past two Super Bowls with the Packers.

Dorsey Levens

Levens Demands 5.5 million from Pack

3/6/98 Dorsey Levens, the Packers franchise running back, has demanded the second highest salary in Packers team history behind Brett Favre's 6.75 million dollar deal that he signed last year. Levens is demanding a salary of 5.5 million dollars. Levens based his demands on Robert Smith's 5.3 million dollar deal, and Barry Sanders 5.7 million dollars. Levens wants to sign a long term deal with the Packers. Flight hopes that Ron Wolf makes the right move and keeps his star running back by giving in to the demands.

Robinson Leaves GB

3/5/98 Green Bay has lost another starting free agent. Eugene Robinson reportedly has signed with the Falcons for a 2 year, 3.55 million dollar deal. Green Bay only offered Robinson 600,000 a year. Robinson was apparently angry that GB couldn't offer him a respectable salary. Leroy Butler was angry about losing Robinson also and said that GB would have a tough time on defense next year. Darren Sharper will have to step up to replace Robinson.

GB Signs Roell Preston

3/4/98 The Packers have resigned WR/KR Roell Preston as a free agent. Preston is the Packers record holder for single-game return yardage which he accomplished in the Nov. 16th loss to the Indianapolis Colts last season. He was released by GB after that game. Preston is in his 3rd season in the NFL, after being drafted in the 5th round by the Atlanta Falcons.
