Landeta Signs with Pack2/26/98 Today the Packers signed 13 year NFL veteran Sean Landeta to replace Craig Hentrich who signed with the Oilers earlier this week. The 36-year old Landeta averaged 42.1 yards per kick last year with the Bucs, but has a career average of 43.6 yards. Packers GM Ron Wolf said that he plans to sign another punter to compete with Landeta for the starting job.
2/22/98 Antonio Freeman has rejected a long term deal from the Packers and will play for $1.153 million this year. Freeman wants to wait till next year to sign a long-term contract. The salary cap is expected to make another big jump next year when Freeman will become an unrestricted free agent. Freeman caught 81 passes for 1243 yards and 12 TD's this year.
2/20/98 Packers RB Edgar Bennett has signed with our arch rival, the Chicago Bears. Bennett staying in GB wasn't possible after the Packers named Levens their franchise player. Bennett received a 4 year, $6 million deal. Bennett led the Packers in rushing from 94-97 until in Preseason 97 when Bennett tore his achilles tendon and was out for the year.
2/19/98 Packers Defensive End Gabe Wilkins has signed with the 49ers. He reportedly signed a 5 year contract, worth 20 million. Last year with the Pack, Wilkins replaced Sean Jones with 50 tackles and 6 sacks. He also scored 2 TD's, including a spectacular 77 yarder against the Bucs in October. The Packers were already limited at DE, with Reggie White aging and no significant backup for Gabe.
2/18/98 The Packers have taken their first free agent blow of the year, by losing unrestricted free agent cornerback Doug Evans. Evans signed a 5 year 22.5 million contract with a 7.5 million signing bonus with the Panthers. The Packers secondary should still be solid next year, with Craig Newsome coming back from knee surgery and Ty Williams and Darren Sharper stepping up.
2/13/98 The Packers signed Veteran wide receiver Robert Brooks and emerging linebacker Brian Williams to Multi Year contracts today. Brooks was signed to a 5 year contract worth 15 million and will be with the Packers through 2002. Williams was signed to a 4 year pact, worth between 10-12 million a year. Brooks caught 60 balls for 1010 yards and 7 scores this year. Williams had a breakthrough year as he made over 100 tackles.
2/12/98 The Packers named Dorsey Levens a franchise player today. This means that Levens will play for at least the franchise RB tender of 2.75 million, which is the average of the five-highest paid running backs in the league. In the case that Levens signs with another team, GB first gets a chance to match the offer, and if they decline they get 2 first round draft choices for compensation. Levens wants a long term contract, which is what the Pack wants also.
2/7/98 Green Bay Packers President Bob Harlan said today that the Packers were going to extend their stock sale to accomodate more Packer fans. The Packers had originally expected to sell all of the 400,000 shares that they were offering and raise 80 million, but today he said that he hoped to raise 30 to 40 million, or about half the stock available.
![]() 2/6/98 Dorsey Levens' agent said today that if Levens receives an offer from another team, the Packers will be given a chance to match that offer and keep Levens in Titletown. The Packers haven't offered Levens a contract yet and probably won't declare him a franchise player. Levens' agent also said that Dorsey wants a long-term contract. He said that this is Leven's oppurtunity and he wants to capitalize on it.
2/4/98 Gil Haskell, wide receivers coach for the Packers has been hired as Offensive Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. Haskell has spent the last 6 years with the Packers, the first 3 as running backs coach and the last 3 years as the wide receivers coach. Before joining that Packers Haskell spent 9 seasons with the St. Louis Rams where he served as special teams, running backs and wide receivers coaches.
