Flight's AnalysisGreen Bay has taken the first step in keeping all of their key players with the signing of WR Robert Brooks, and ROLB Brian Williams. Ron Wolf has taken the right move, in staying with his philosophy of keeping the core of his players and moving on. Wolf needs to stretch his resources to keep Unrestricted Free Agents Levens, Gabe Wilkins and Aaron Taylor. Restricted FA Antonio Freeman and William Henderson are also priorities. If Ron Wolf can keep this core, the Packers can survive and make another run at the NFL championship.
The Packers offseason will be an interesting one as the Pack attempts to sign all of their key players and keep the team intact for yet another Super Bowl run. The top free agents tbat the Pack needs to sign are Dorsey Levens, Doug Evans, Aaron Taylor and Gabe Wilkins.
Running back Dorsey Levens is a intrical part of the Packers offense attack and Ron Wolf will go measures to sign this guy for years to come. Levens is looking for a deal in the range of 14 mil. over 4 years. Levens signing will make things complicated for Edgar Bennett who was injured in Preseason. Bennett has expressed his wished to stay in GB, but if his price is too high he's out the door. The Pack can't afford to dish out big bucks to both backs.
Another priority for the Pack is to sign CB Doug Evans. Evans played a critical roll in shutting down teams big play WR.. Moore of Detroit..Irvin of Dallas..Bruce of St. Louis..and Carter of the Vikings. Signing Evans would mean that returning CB Craig Newsome might have to move to Safety and take Eugene Robinson's place.
Offensive lineman Aaron Taylor had a great year, dominating on the run and pass. If we want to keep giving Levens huge holes to run through, Taylor is a priority. On the other side of the ball, defensive end Gabe Wilkins had a good year replacing Sean Jones. Wilkins saved the game and made the Play of the Year, Oct. 5th when he intercepted Dilfer of Tampa Bay, hurdled him and rumbled for the TD. Other teams will try to lure Wilkins away from the Pack with lucratve offers but if we need to strengthen the Defensive Line this offseason, signing Wilkins is a must.
Other free agents the Packers have are Robert Brooks, Craig Hentrich, and Eugene Robinson. The Packers also have an assortment of restriced free agents that the Pack can keep as long as they meet the offers of other teams for these players. Brian Williams, Antonio Freeman, William Henderson, Adam Timmerman, and special teams demon Travis Jervey are on the list of Restricted free agents. Williams, Henderson and Freeman all must be signed. Their contracts will be in the range of 2-3 million per year if resigned. ![]() 1998 Packer Free Agents
