AKA: Bobbi, Agent 19, Huntress
Family: Hawkeye, husband
Lover: Hawkeye, husband
Affliation: Former: West Coast Avengers, Great Lake Avengers,
SHIELD
Appearance:
Avengers (Vol I) 250
Powers: Mockingbird, like her ex-husband Hawkeye, is a completely
normal human being. She is trained spy and often fights with her battle staves, which may
join together to form one staff. Her name is derived from the fact she used to berate her
oppenents in battle.
Origin: Nick Fury, colonel of SHIELD, saw something special in the
SHIELD scientist Bobbi Morse. He trained her and sent her into the field as Agent 19.
Bobbi ended up in the Savage Land, fighting alongside Ka-zar. To find a mole in SHIELD,
Bobbie became the heroine Huntress, and set off on her own. She found more moles, teamed
up with Spider-Man and Nick Fury, and took the code-name Mockingbird.
History: After she left SHIELD, she found herself teamed up with
the former Avenger Hawkeye. The two fell instantly in love, and the direction of
Mockingbird's life changed forever. The two were married in the span of only two weeks and
Mockingbird soon became an ally of the Avengers.
When it came time to establish the West Coast branch of the Avengers, Hawkeye became the
team's new leader and he choose his wife as a member, officially making her an Avenger.
Alongside Iron Man, Wonder Man, and Tigra, the WCA became Mockingbird's first real home
outside of SHIELD.
But her perfect life was about to end. Thrown through time, Mockingbird fought herself the
victim of the Phantom Rider, a villain in 1876. The Phantom Rider used a potion on her to
make her believe that he was her lover. When the other Avengers came to rescue her and the
truth about the Rider was revealed, Mockingbird was destroyed. The Phantom Rider had
essentially drugged and raped her. In a duel, the Phantom Rider fell off the edge of an
cliff and Mockingbird did nothing to save him.
The ghost of the Rider hung between Hawkeye and Mockingbird. Slowly, it tore them apart.
Mockingbird had been a spy before; this was not the first time she had killed. But Hawkeye
was an Avenger through and through; he believed killing, in any form, was wrong.
Eventually, their fighting broke the West Coast Avengers down the middle. Hawkeye remained
with the team, while Mockingbird left with Tigra and Moon Knight at her side.
Mockingbird, Tigra, and Moon Knight were a force to be reckoned with. They fought the High
Evoluntionary and aided the WCA ever now and then. But Moon Knight and Tigra decided to
move on,and Mockingbird was left to reconsider her decision to leave Hawkeye and the
Avengers.
She returned several times to aide them, including helping the Scarlet Witch find the
remains of the syntheziod Vision. Mockingbird and Hawkeye nearly finalized their divorce,
but they both continued to delay it. Eventually, Mockingbird began to train the Great Lake
Avengers. Hawkeye met up with her again, and the two began to date.
Slowly, their differences were resolved. Mockingbird returned to the West Coast Avengers.
Their love blossomed anew, and Mockingbird was happy. Their happiness would not last long.
In a battle with Mephisto, Hawkeye was nearly killed. Mockingbird jumped to save him, but
she failed. Instead, she sacrificed her life to save his. Because Mephisto rules over a
portion of Hell, he claimed Mockingbird's soul for the rest of eternity. Hawkeye had lost
Mockingbird forever.
Mockingbird, however, continued to have a presence felt on Earth. She came in time to met
with Hellcat, another super-heroine who was trapped in Hell. When several dead Avengers
were returned to Earth, Mockingbird was able to tell the Wasp that she neeed to speak with
Hawkeye.
The message was relayed, and Hawkeye, now leading the former super-criminals Thunderbolts,
led the descent into Mephisto's realm. But instead of freeing Mockingbird from the chains
of Hell, he freed Hellcat, who Mockingbird was trying to save all along. Bobbi's soul
continues to rest in Mephisto's realm, perhaps until the end of time. |
