Minnie Driver is another of our most precious home-grown talents - even though, like Miss Morton [referring to Samantha Morton in previous review of 'Sweet And Lowdown'] she has had to travel to America to make her finest work.
She co-stars with the X-Files's David Duchovny in Return To Me, a bittersweet romance.
This is another slight story, but a heartwarmer. If you enjoyed Cher in Moonstruck, you'll love this too.
The normally deadpan Duchovny brings unexpected humour and warmth to this role as a man whose wife (Joely Richardson) dies in a car crash. A year on, he falls for an Irish-American waitress (Minnie Driver), unaware that she has had a heart transplant, and her new heart is that of his dead wife. When will they realise the truth? And will it be a barrier between them?
It could all have been terribly maudlin but the chemistry between the two leads is so strong that you genuinely want them to get together.
Dtiver is gorgeous and very appealing, in the same way that sandra Bullock was in while you were sleeping, or Meg Ryan was in When Harry Met Sally.
There is much ethnic cosiness- the waitress's elaborately Irsih grandpa (Caroll O' Connor) helps run and Italian restaurant entirely populated by racial stereotypes.
The film is directed and co-written by the talented Bonnie Hunt, who turns in a characteristically ironic performance as the heroine's older sister.
A lot of the film's strengths lie in the minute details of family life, and there are some delightful insights into the sister's marriage (James Belushi is excellent as her slobbish but kindly husband).
There's nothing very suprising or original about Return To Me. It's not a film to approach in a critical spirit, more of a warm bath of sentiment in which to have a wallow. It's naive and old-fashioned, but also innocent and sweet.
