Basic Info About State Police Radio System and Vermont PD Radio Numbers

Funds Available For New VT Police Radios

===============================================

Basic Overview - Most police work in Vermont is done by the State Police and various city police departments. Smaller towns and villages are protected by local constables, local police departments, some County Sheriff units, and by the State Police. There are no regional PDs and no sharing of PDs among seperate towns or cities. Mutual aid is practiced among all police agencies. Fire protection is provided by fire departments in each city or town. (Perhaps 10 or 20 towns have no fire department - they are protected by nearby fire departments). Mutual aid is used by all FDs on either an automatic or call-when-needed basis. Ambulance service is provided by regional ambulance services. Typically, an ambulance service will cover 5 towns. Public Safety Dispatch is done either on a regional basis or locally or by the State Police.

Most police officers are fulltime employees (except for reserve municipal officers, weekend sheriffs officers, and town constables). Most fire and ambulance staff are part time/on call staff.

The following link is the site where I currently have 68 VT and NH apparatus pictures online. I have taken them at parades and Open Houses over the past 3 or 4 years. When I get home from work tonight, I will add Peachem's Jeep (I got a pic of it at the State parade in St. J). I (hfr1@aol.com) currently have over 300 photos I will be periodically adding to the photopoint site. Here is the site: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1182019&a=8705919

From VtFireCommand@egroups.com on ?08 Sept 00 - Slow response to another fire in Highgate has left a family there also without a home... The fire was called in to central dispatch at around 3:30 Thursday afternoon, but for an unknown reason, the town of SWANTON fire department was toned out to respond. The chief of the HIGHGATE fire department happened to hear the call, so his department also responded a couple of minutes later. The chief says he does not know why his department was not toned out first. The fire appeared to start in the kitchen -- it's cause is under investigation.

April 2000 radio info from the VermontScanner@onelist.com list

Grand Isle County Sheriff's - now using the 460.025 VSP St. Albans repeater, and also have 453.875 MHz. as a 'local' channel. Not in use very much. Also, they don't yet have 800 MHz radios, but I believe they will once the system is up and running.

Franklin County Sheriff's - dispatched by VSP on 460.025; use 453.250 for in-department comms (I heard that they are trying to find a way to go to their own dispatcher)

St. Albans PD - 460.050 is Channel 1, 460.150 is RED-5 (voice scrambled)

Swanton PD - dispatched by VSP St. Albans on 460.025, also have the capability of 460.050 to chat with St. Albans City, use 155.700 as a squirrel channel, and actually dispatch during business hours on 460.500! BTW - 155.940 is the Swanton Fire, Public Works and Power Company channel; they do have it in their VHF radios.
