----------

Franklin County - Swanton (a post to VTFCmd)

The post of 3/21 indicated that the fire budget for Swanton of approximately $85,000 was passed - including some monies to go toward a purchase of a new pumper. This was the Town's approximate 70% share of the Department's budget that was approved at Town Meeting.
On 3/15/99 at the annual VILLAGE meeting the voters approved by voice vote an additonal $35,000 to go to the Fire Dept that also includes money toward a new pumper. The new pumper was voted on 2 years ago and was delivered last April - these monies are for the loan payment on the engine and will continue for the next 2 years.
The department total operating budget is approximately $120,000. The Department is owned by the Village, but the Town contracts for protection. The fee for the protection is based upon the grand list and the Town has 70% of the total taxable property and the Village the remaining 30% thus the split. The individual taxpayer be they in the Town or Village pays the same amount in a tax rate for fire protection.
