PUBLIC SAFETY COMMUNICATIONS IN GRAND ISLE COUNTY VERMONT

Grand Isle County Vermont is a string of islands on the northern edge of Lake Champlain at the New York and Canada border. A rural area of rolling hills, the county is 10 miles wide and 40 miles long.

Five towns make up Grand Isle County - they are Allburg, South Hero, North Hero, La Motte, and Grand Isle. Police service is provided by the County Sheriff Office and the Vermont State Police. Ambulance service is provided by the Allburg FD Rescue Squad (with 2 ambos)(which covers LaMotte via contract), the Grand Isle R Sqd (which covers Grand Isle plus N Hero), and the South Hero R Sqd. Fire service is provided by 1 FD in each town.

Future Radio System - 800T - spring 1999 - due to the heavy usage of radio channels in the Burlington VT area and the Montreal area, it was proving impossible to augment the VHF high band radio channels for the fire units. Apparently there was also some faulty coordination of frequencies and some apparent recalcitrance on the part of the coordinating officials. Federal funds are being used to assist in the purchasing of the new $225,000 800T system.
