Chandu Wijeratne Age 13 years from Sri Lanka – a Burn victim

One year ago, Chandu had come home around 6 in the evening after playing cricket in school. Since he was feeling very tired, he had an early dinner and a shower and gone to bed. They had no electricity and he was using a bottle kerosene oil lamp to read. He was reading the newspaper in bed when the cat decided to chase an insect and knock the lamp. The paper caught fire burning his hands and the back. He arrived in Melbourne on 7 September at 4.30 pm in transit to Launceston, Tasmania. The District Governor Bob Sydes and wife Jan arrived at Melbourne to take charge of Chandu and fly with him to Tasmania to be looked after by the clubs in District 9830. Chandu was operated at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Launceston. Tasmania, by Surgeon Gary Kode.

Eustina and Eustocia Bosin from PNG

Henry and Magdalene Bosin living in the remote Pacific Island of Buka were excitedly expecting the birth of their first child.

Ten hours after Magdalene went into labour complications set in and she was rushed in the back of a utility to the local hospital where without electricity, running water, a two hour unsuccessful attempt was made to delivery the baby. She was rushed to theatre where a caesarian section delivered cojoined twins, one of which had severe respitory problems. They were rushed to Port Moresby the next day where the condition of Eustina worsened. Seven days later they were evacuated by ROMAC to Melbourne's Royal Childrens Hospital where a team of 30 specialists performed a miracle.

Eustina and Eustocia shared a liver, but with expert care they have grown into two healthy young girls.
