The railway is built in a similar style to a raised garden.
The benefits:
+ Don't have to bend down so far to set up trains
+ Gain height for bridges.
+ Better height for viewing.
Half-round treated logs can be purchased from garden centres.

The Layout is 2.5 x 6.5 metres in size.

Bridges
There are 2 major bridges and a tunnel.
The bridges have been hand built from a few pieces of wood that were given to us as firewood.
The tunnel was made in a concrete mould that I made.

Jigger Crossing Bridge No.1
Track
The track is all hand built. The rail is 9mm x 3mm Aluminium bar, painted on the sides with red oxide paint. The sleepers are wood cut from strips of Garden Trellis (used to grow plants up). The sleepers have slots cut and the rails are hammered and glued in. I got this idea from Greg Hunter, who has an excellent website describing how you can make this (see the links page). Mine cost less per metre than HO flex track!  The points were also built to his design.

Water Features
There are Three ponds on the railway and are linked by a series of cascading waterfalls.
A water pump has been installed in the Hydro Power Station building (the only one that stays outside) and keeps the waterfall running.  It took quite a lot of placement to get the rocks sitting at a level that was flat for the water and still look geographically believable.

All of the buildings have been handbuilt and are put away at the end of each running session.

Two Trailer loads of rocks were gathered and hand loaded and unloaded for the railway.

The rock wall shown at left is made from Limestone gathered locally on the 'Port Hills'.  This has not stood up to the frosts very well as it cracks when water gets inside and freezes. Most of the other rocks are river rocks and are much harder. For Details of the construction of the railway click
