| Hard Luck (2006) Cast:Wesley Snipes, Cybil Shepherd, Mario Van Peebles, Luiz Guzman Wesley Snipes stars as a thief who dodges mobsters when he gets his hands on some money and then stumbles upon a group of serial killers and finds himself forced use his wits to survive these backwoods killers in this ambitious and surprisingly entertaining STV Snipes effort. I must admit I went in with really low expectations for this because 7 Seconds and The Marksman were edged into my mind still, but with Van Peebles directing and this taking place in the U.S, I was willing to give it a shot and thankfully I found it quite entertaining. This movie is of course flawed in how its put together, in that it is all over the map and you seriously don't know where it's going but it's one of those movies that benefits because of its overall weirdness and ambitions. I also forgot how good Snipes could be when he wants to be, I often take shots at Seagal and Snipes when talking to Greywizard, Neil Koch and Davideo when we discuss films saying how tired I am of Snipes' one note cool black dude performances (Much like i'm tired of Seagal's endless secret agent roles) but when Snipes plays a down on his luck thief he actually can cut a pretty appealing figure. Now those who think I hate Snipes, must remember I enjoyed The Art Of War, Blade Trinity and Rising Sun and added to the good list is Hard Luck, a surprising edition perhaps but I just appreciate a movie that throws everything but the kitchen sink at the audience, especially a STV movie that does so though Van Peebles always was an ambitious director even if he failed, he always tried too much and not too little and Van Peebles deserves credit for making this Snipes flick work..D.Mario Van Peebles*** |
